Seriously, how is anyone dumb enough to be fat?

What I've learned so far disturbs me greatly. People are so, so dumb.

I know people who worry about their weight, but don't do anything to change their destructive/unhealthy lifestyles! It's like they never bothered learning nutrition and they don't want to learn it now.

This is what I've learned: people are extremely ignorant. In fact they're so unaware that they try "fad diets" with no concept as to why it would or wouldn't work. They say that they want to lose weight - but don't even bother to make the easy small changes to their eating habits that would guarantee it!!

Like true, I don't really understand how my car engine works and that's why I let a mechanic take care of it - but we're talking about our bodies, how do people not take proper care of their own bodies???

So seriously, how is it that people are so, so dumb??

Why this is not a good parody:

Weight loss has objective, demonstrable benefits to one's life and well-being.

God has not been demonstrated to even exist.

I think being overweight has usually nothing at all to do with stupidity.

It's more to do with addiction, and comfort.

I have a big sugar addiction which isn't too bad because my work is physical plus I go to the gym. But if I had a better job working in an office for long hours and I never got into the habit of exercise I can see how I'd easily become overweight.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

Yah, I was a farm boy, and then in the service, and then a laborer. My weight has become a problem since I began working in an office, and I started doing that around 1990.

RE: Seriously, how is anyone dumb enough to be fat?
I never had a weight problem until I reached my thirties. I honestly believe for many people it is a metabolism thing whereby they do not know how to adjust, and that is how the weight gets out of control. When one is younger, most people have high metabolisms which allow them to do the minimal amount of worrying about their weight while being able to eat like pigs and drink alcohol in excess. When my metabolism began to slow down in my thirties, I honestly thought I could remain in front of my computer all the time and not have to worry about working out. That is how my weight got out of control. My weight has been going up and down the these past few years, and I am currently in the process of losing weight again. My stomach is getting smaller and I am almost at the desired weight I need to be.

It also helps that I actively ran cross-country and track when I was younger and throughout my life, because that is honestly the only way I can lose weight. I tried the gym experience, but I only lost a couple of pounds during the months I was working out. The reason for that is because gym workouts tend to turn fat into muscle, which was not making me lose weight whatsoever, while jogging actually does shed the pounds.

Everyone is different, of course. Some people do have glandular problems which makes their weight get out of control, though I admit that for most people it is is either pure laziness or the inability to know what to do when their metabolisms change.

Also, diet does play a role, though not for everyone. It is stated that one must always eat three square meals a day, but even while working out eating that much is not going to help shed the pounds. One must eat healthier, but also less than what is supposedly recommended by the so-called experts. One cannot eat more calories than one loses during workout, and eating three meals a day tends to add up to more calories than one loses during daily workouts. I have been eating one small meal a day while drinking lots of water while also trying to jog daily, and that is how I have been losing weight.

Time management can also be a problem, especially when one works too much to have the time to workout.

Some atheists.

On average, they're average.

Or like they crave salty, fatty, sweet foods and have numerous attractive diversions that don't require exercise.

Addictions can be hard to kick. Unlike other addictions, people who have issues with food still have to keep eating it.

I assume you're trying to make fun of some atheists who take this approach to making fun of religious people, but it comes off as a comparison between being religious and being fat, and not a bad one at that: A misfiring of natural impulses that may once have given people with them an advantage over their competitors in the world we evolved in and is perfectly understandable in that context but which is useless or even an actual hindrance in the modern developed world.

In reading this through again, it is also that weight loss and maintenance takes time.
The quick fixes that are out there are part of our "we want it now" cultural mindset.

I eat clean, exercise, etc..it's a lifestyle. It takes a commitment. We live in a society where the quick fix mentality is pervasive across others areas, too. Because of technology, we don't have much patience anymore. lol

I think that is more of what it is than sheer ignorance. IMHO.

If we're treating this as an actual thread about why people don't lose weight:

Nutrition is often not explicitly taught in (American) schools. The health classes I took didn't cover nutrition at all, they covered the basics of human anatomy and sexual reproduction. The only class I ever had that even mentioned nutrition was a 100-level health class in college which spent 20 minutes of one class on the subject.

Yes.

Quote:In fact they're so unaware that they try "fad diets" with no concept as to why it would or wouldn't work.

A great reason to advocate for a more skeptical and scientifically literate society.

Quote:They say that they want to lose weight - but don't even bother to make the easy small changes to their eating habits that would guarantee it!!

Some people can't be bothered to change their habits or address their addictions or psychological reasons why they turn to food.

Both of my parents have had bariatric surgery. My dad has recently begun putting weight back on. His response wasn't to stop his late night snacking on unhealthy, salty foods and replace his sugary, high-calorie fruit juice with water, nor was it to be more active and burn off the calories he is able to consume, it was to go get his lap band filled so he can't eat as much.

In both my parents' cases, they don't want to make major life style changes, they don't want to have to give up the foods they love, they don't want to go to the gym every day and put the time and effort in, knowing that it's time and effort they'll have to devote for the rest of their lives to keep the weight off, they want to easy fix. They want results without the work.

If this is your life philosophy

then why bother?

Yah, I was a farm boy, and then in the service, and then a laborer. My weight has become a problem since I began working in an office, and I started doing that around 1990.

I gain weight whenever I don't get a lot of exercise. It's not because I necessarily eat unhealthy foods. I was recently berated by the doctor for this assumption for being overweight, yet when she tested all blood levels and everything else besides my weight (asthma/allergies notwithstanding) I was healthy as a horse. My boyfriend even monitored my food consumption for a while and was impressed that I prefer fruit to chocolate, stove-top popcorn to microwaved, water to soda, etc.

It really all has to do with a sedentary lifestyle and the weight melts off when I become a gym rat, spend all my evenings gardening, or excessive time out in the woods on photography tromps. It's not about being stupid.

Meanwhile, I'd like to point out that being "skinny" doesn't mean you're healthy. That same boyfriend is only about 20 lbs over what the gov't says he should be. I think he looks fit and healthy. His job requires him to walk 3-5 miles all over a studio, bending, squatting, etc while he takes portraits. However, because I actively hike and go to the gym, I have greater endurance than he does. Put both of us out on a trail on a hot day in the summer and I guarantee I'll last longer - even with the asthma. That's because I make time to use the elliptical.

Your post is basically a regurgitation of every misnomer known to the media about obesity.

Americans in particular suffer from work ethics which are encouraged to require people to sit at a desk for 8+ hours in order to look "dedicated", and we're inundated with fast food options in order to maintain this ethic without being told what calorie amounts those food actually contain. Wives and mothers who sift through places like Pinterest are much more likely to find dessert recipes than healthy food choices which could be packed into lunches. We're peer-pressured into watching TV shows (this is A Thing - I get berated because I don't like to sit and watch TV 99% of my free time), and our suburbs can be horrible places to try to get exercise, or to choose to walk to the store instead of driving, and many of our cities are not structured for pedestrian living.

I don't consider these things excuses, per se - people can work around just about anything if they're dedicated. But sometimes culture needs to change to regard some things as more important than others, and our culture still requires us to drive everywhere because the car is a status symbol, and for us to work long hours doing stupid shit because 'Murica! I could be skinny as shit if I didn't have to work till 5 every day.

I've gone from skinny, to fat, to losing. Knowledge obviously helps, but like people said there's plenty of factors. It's a lifestyle you gotta change, I come from a family where we were raised in athletics, and pretty much ate whatever cause we burned it off. That caught up to me, but sometimes things need to be switched up to get the results you want, as well as the hard work. Some people just don't want to put in the work, or it can be hard for them. There's plenty of smart people with big belly's.

Well there's a big difference between habits and addictive behaviour. A big difference. I'm aware that people fatten up by being ignorant to their diet and continuing in their unhealthy eating habits, it's got little to do with addiction.

I'll grant you that some things are addictive - MSG, chocolate, tea, coffee. But that only makes up a small part of the problem.
