Perhaps your buddy has noticed that no one with your worldview gives a satisfactory answer to the big 3 questions of life:

Where did I come from?
What is the purpose of my life?

You mummy's tummy.

The same place you were 100 years ago.

Hm. Well. I think I could answer those questions with a high degree of accuracy.
I came from the union of one of my mother's eggs and one of my father's sperm cells.
The purpose of my life, as far as I know, is to pass on my genetic material. Other than that... Well, I like friendship, women, interesting experiences, and having fun. Among other things.
In 100 years I will probably be dead and gone. My psyche will have been utterly erased from existence. This doesn't bother me much, since something that doesn't exist can't experience horror. It may be almost impossible to accept this, but I believe it to be true.

But you are right -- I probably should stop worrying so much about my friend's religious beliefs... But can I!?

OK Sven, you can stop worrying.
If I can keep quiet amid my wife's Catholic family when I detest Catholicism, and they have an idea of my position, for the sake of being pleasant and caring- You can too.

Besides, with your would view- what difference does it make what he believes?

He would be wasting the one life he has indulging the desires of the imaginary friends of long dead men? Dodgy

Sven, I mean, since you think this life is all there is (in your worldview) he in not in any danger of hellfire. Apparently, is also successful. What is the problem?

I should point out that AFTER Isaac Newton developed his science, he spent a large amount of study on the prophetic parts of the Bible. Even deciding that Israel would be re-established (according to what I read).
His Christianity didn't seem to hurt his acuity.

I don't really have a problem with him. My problem is that he is a member of an organized religion, which I feel is something that does more harm than good. Even to those who preach it, apparently.
For example: just the other day I saw a documentary about female priests (quite common in the Swedish church nowadays). The early female priests in the sixties and seventies were bullied and mocked horribly by a majority of the male priests, and also by members of their own congregations. The documentary was about one female priest who was driven to drink and self destructive behavior. In the end she embezzled a large sum of collection money from her church and after being exposed, drank herself to death.

Isaac Newton a christian? To be honest, that doesn't mean very much at all to me. Back in those days the number of atheists in Europe could probably be counted on the right hand fingers of a meat grinder repairman.
But I get your meaning. It is possible to compartmentalize one's mind.

My dad used to say, in a take off of Jesus' words: "Wherever 2 or more are gathered.....there's trouble".

Everybody has baggage they bring to the party- organized or disorganized -it is around somewhere.
You think your group hasn't any?
You needn't answer that one.

Let's just say that before I found this forum, I thought I had some issues. Not so much, anymore.

Problem is, atheists aren't really a group. Its hard to be united by a lack of belief in something.
