It's really a sort of sub-plot that you can read as the character finds the occasional book or letter during the game. The player's character is a "nephalem," which the game initially indicates is just a gifted human of some kind. The just-released expansion indicates that not only are the nephalem the hybrid offspring of angel-demon sex, but that all humans have at least some demon DNA (with the implication that there is just as much angel DNA swimming around in there).
