This type of religion is not compatible with anything but ignorance.

Yep but it isn't necessary for people to give up all belief in god in order to give up thinking the bible is a natural history reference.

I still think we go too far if we dismiss all religious belief on the basis of its worst fundamentalist forms.

There is a strong likelihood that if we'd grown up in the same circumstances as many theists we'd believe what they do. In my own case, just knowing an atheist led to my challenging the indignation I initially felt toward disbelief. Given how much I liked my uncle it was easier to re-evaluate my assumptions than to dismiss my direct assessment of his character.

And for the record I never heard you say anything which would count as bullshit, before or after your change. There really are reasonable ways to hold god belief which are compatible with science and a modern sensibility. One of my favorite television personalities, Bill Moyers, is a baptist and I very much respect his views on many matters.

What, you mean suppressing any and all scientific findings that might call your beliefs into question? No thanks, dark ages is already over.

this is exactly what I am talking about.

Science doesn't say this. scientists do.

Religion, in part, is just your emotional connection with your surroundings. It can exist just fine with science.

What is troublesome is when people try and tell us we must believe what they do even if it goes against observation. Like rising from the dead.

I disagree with whatever's approach only in that it seems to focuses on "what we don't know, or can't know. Conclusions based on what is not known are as useful as a body rising.

Science is a process people. It don't say a flipping thing. It is data collection. Science is like cooking. Scientist is like a cook. religion is the eating experience. No one has the right to force their type of food down your throat if it makes you sick.

It funny watching people saying "no" that really shouldn't even be commenting on it.

Bugger, I'll scratch anthropology, psychology, neurology, evolutionary biology off my list then. I never liked them anyway, they didn't prop-up my beliefs about science.

I'm glad we've lurched out of the dark ages... anyone know where the light switch is?

"I think I use the term “radical” rather loosely, just for emphasis. If you describe yourself as “atheist,” some people will say, “Don’t you mean ‘agnostic’?” I have to reply that I really do mean atheist, I really do not believe that there is a god; in fact, I am convinced that there is not a god (a subtle difference). I see not a shred of evidence to suggest that there is one ... etc., etc. It’s easier to say that I am a radical atheist, just to signal that I really mean it, have thought about it a great deal, and that it’s an opinion I hold seriously." - Douglas Adams (and I echo the sentiment)
