And that's about the only thing positive I can think of . . .

besides LRH admitting the whole thing was a scam to make money, which means it's not a religion at all and therefore falls out of the continuum of things discussed here ?

Confusedhock:

What the hell do you think Mormonism was?

Pretty much all religion is the continuation of a successfully executed con trick. The thing which distinguishes Scientology is that it was a con perpetrated in plain sight within living memory .

Of course not. We all know that. Scientology has never attempted to covert anyone by force."

From http://www.huffingtonpost.com/russell-sh...27878.html

Well if by force you don't include conscription of minors. Some are lured into making multi-generational contracts before the age of consent. That makes ever getting out harder for those unfortunate enough to be born into this cult. Scientology deserves to be ridiculed frequently and forcefully at every opportunity. This cult is undeserving of our tolerance.

This article by Robert Shaw is cult P.R. at it's finest. He obviously hasn't done any research regarding what the cult does to people or cult critics. Perhaps he's a cult shill due to his insistence scientology is a religion.

Scientology isn't a religion anymore than a Mafia crime ring is and about as benevolent. Many many Ex-scientologists need therapy from the psychological trauma induced, some take years to recover if at all.

The religion angle scientology uses is an orchestrated cloak to shield itself from laws intended to protect unsuspecting citizens from deceptively illegal practices.

Fair Game, Disconnection, forced abortions, slave labor, child abuse, human trafficking, blackmail, murder, community and government infiltrations, with lies, cover ups and instilling fear are the tip of the iceberg with scientology.

May everyone who has been this nightmare find peace.

Indeed. I hope you don't speak from first hand experience.

Actually, I am speaking from experience in a sense. I was in for 32 years. I saw families torn apart, people bled dry of their finances, children sent to the sea org to be slave labor. To a scientologist that was normal.

It wasn't until I left and started researching scientology on the internet that I found out about Lisa McPherson, who died while held against her will. Paulette Cooper, a whistle blower who was framed for a felony and gaslighted into what was hoped to be her suicide personally directed by hubbard.

It's something of a shock to realize I was a useful idiot for a criminal cult. All smiles inviting others to join. It's a ghastly experience, one I feel strongly about, especially when I read that bogus pack of intentional lying misdirection called a news article.

OSA (Office of Special Affirs), scientology's secret intelligence dept. uses the legal system to financially destroy any critics caught in their trap which is harass, lie, invent evidence, besmirch reputations, any method to subjugate an enemy. Scientology isn't litigious when they feel their rights are violated, they take away peoples rights through intimidation and fear abusing the legal system when someone blows the whistle on their activities.

Call scientology a mixture of Big Brother and the Gestapo and you wouldn't be far off the mark.

I do not understand how we, as atheists, can any longer be genuinely surprised by what religion does.

After all, it is religion. The antithesis to reason.

To be shocked or surprised it so to be under the mistaken impression that religion has evolved past fantasy.
