"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Thinl of it this way, the statistical chances of an asteriod impact large enough to most higher life on the surface of the earth (a asteriod 10-20 miles across will do it) happening within your life time is roughly 7.5e-8.

That is 3 times higher than the odds of a single lottery ticket winning the jackpot in the Megamillion lottery.

If you play that lottery, that means you regard those odds as being worthy of action and investment.

Hint hint.....

What about the odds of one large enough to wipe out a town or city and kill thousands, or possibly millions of people? Any reminder that the ground isn't as solid and safe as I like to think, as we dangle here in space with nothing to protect us from anything significant makes me more than a little uneasy.

Interesting thought, though, that the mechanism "God" chooses to visit its wrath and judgement on the Earth follows known, predictable laws of orbital mechanics and mass-energy conservation. You'd think that a real god (contradiction in terms though that be) would - I don't know - materialise an ocean over the most 'sinful' cities, or vaporise them entirely à la Sod 'em and Gamera.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

They made a movie about it, called "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T43InzvBm-k. It would be awesome to see something like that.

Should I be seeing a point to this thread?
