Eilonnwy, thats how I feel too! I think crosses are really pretty, and I used to wear them all the time, especially the one I got that was my grandmothers after she died. Since it had very little significance to me, although at the time I was agnostic and not really an atheist, I wore it because it reminded me of my grandmother. I don't wear it anymore because living with my aunt, I don't want her to get the wrong idea that I've 'converted'. I'm honestly not offensive to her, besides maybe rolling my eyes once in a while because she talks about god all the time, tries to argue with me about evolution, etc. It's rediculous because she doesnt want an intelligent conversation and isnt interested in broadening her herizons. She accuses me because of being very closeminded because I dismiss all religion, but that doesnt mean I like to stop learning about them... I just don't believe in the supernatural. I don't see her trying to learn about other religions or possibly converting, so why is it different? because i believe in nothing? I honestly couldnt believe she gave it to me as a gift and I wish I could stand up for myself more because when it comes to religion shes a huge bully to me. I agree that if she didnt know I was an atheist, I wouldnt of made a fuss at all.

Also, thank you for all your suggestions guys, they are dually noted :p

I haven't read the bible as well. Don't really see the point. I've got better things to do with my time. Got to page one and that was enough to annoy me so I got rid of it. My life runs nicely without religion so who needs it?Big Grin
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

bwahaha, we are sitting here in the living room and my aunt is talking to my other aunt about what she got me for christmas (we have company for new years) and she goes, "hey I didn't see you wear your cross yet", and I was just like "uhh yeah thats because i didnt wear it yet". If we didnt have company I would have told her I'm sorry, but I'm not going to wear it because it's not something I believe in and would be offensive to me and you. I'm not going to start an argument though with company here, its nobodys business what I do or dont believe in unless i want to make it known. Its not that im embaressed of being an atheist either, believe me most of my other family knows, theres just no point in ruining my holiday.

The most bloody annoying thing you can do is to be respectful and kind to her unkindness, or in other words, pull your best imitation of a Christ-like figure in terms of being gracious - then politely return it. Fundies always find this maddening - how can you be above their world view of black/white? Big Grin

I still say Fr0d0 nailed it when he said to where it upside down. If anyone asks you can say you belong to the sect of Peter. I think it is better to sow disinformation than confront or dodge; sometimes at least...

I'd rather just live and let live because it only ends in a fight, not understanding). She also signed the package "God, I love you!" I wanted to scream I really did, just because its really offensive. If it was anyone else giving it to me just because the necklace was nice (it actually is, but trust me ill never wear it) thats one thing, but there was no good intent behind this gift. You dont give someone a gift to please yourself, you do it because its something they would like.

It was just so rediculous because it wouldnt be ok for me to give her a copy of the koran, or a jewish star as a gift... so why is this ok in her delusional thinking? I cannot wait to move out...

I'd send her the cross back on a significant holiday like Christmas nicely wrapped around a copy of Christopher Hitchens 'God is not Great' to see how she likes it.

I agree with Adrian on this matter.

Exactly the same here actually. The only reason I wouldn't wear one is because it would be so incredibly misleading. I think they look fucking awesome. Why? I have no idea!

Cut off the top of the cross, get a hammer and whack the remaining ends until they are balled.

You just made a hammer symbol, suitable for Thor.

Isn't that infinitely more kick ass?

Then you can say: "Your god was nailed to a cross. My god wields a hammer. Any questions?"
