How can you discern this "joy of the lord in your heart" from simple joy in your heart? Or from your wishing there is a lord that gives joy and believing in it so much that your heart becomes joyful on its own?

This reminds me of an experiment with a death-row inmate... the experiment was to bleed him to death. He would be lying down, belly up, one arm out of the bed, away from his field of vision. The arm would be slit so as for the blood to flow out of him. Simple, huh? The guy died after about an hour or two... The thing is... he was never cut. Someone slashed him, but didn't cut and placed some contraption that would mimic the sound of dripping blood under the bed.
