Thing is, you can tell them as polite as possible, but many theists will still feel offended as soon as you say the word atheist.
Some religious people just take it personally like that.
If he goes around talking to people like that, he should expect that not everyone welcomes him with tea and cake and hallelujah's.

I doubt they do it for publicity reasons. They don't give two fucks what people think about them, and that's part of what has made their show so popular. I would assume it has more to do with not identifying with the angry stereotype the word conjures. I think a lot of people avoid labeling themselves atheist simply because of the baggage the word carries with it.
