How is nothing defined in quantum physics?

"According to quantum theory, the vacuum contains neither matter nor energy, but it does contain fluctuations, transitions between something and nothing in which potential existence can be transformed into real existence by the addition of energy.(Energy and matter are equivalent, since all matter ultimately consists of packets of energy.) Thus, the vacuum's totally empty space is actually a seething turmoil of creation and annihilation, which to the ordinary world appears calm because the scale of fluctuations in the vacuum is tiny and the fluctuations tend to cancel each other out."

Do you really think that everything has always existed in its current form?

This is the work of a troll.

This the shit that makes atheist look just as clowny as their theist counterparts. There's no shame in being honest and saying, "I don't know but god did it sure ain't the answer".

I'm glad I could assist you in making your case :p

Now if anyone would be so kind as to translate this into terms I can understand, that would be super awesome Big Grin

My point was simply that our traditional concept of nothing most likely doesn't exist. Then someone mentioned quantum physics' version of nothing. You dug up the definition which pretty much suggests that something (the transitions) need to be acted on by something else (energy).

Thus, traditional concept of nothing < quantum physics definition of nothing.

Lol I got your point. I was more looking for an easier to understand quantum physics definition of nothing. Although, I think it's more a problem with being able to grasp the possibility than understanding the definition I guess. A ball of transitions which will become a something when you add energy? I always a transition was a verb not a noun. Hmmm
