Is suicide wrong?

Is suicide wrong?
Simple question, is suicide wrong, morally or otherwise?

No.

No, suicide can never be wrong. It is, however, often sadly unnecessary.

Suicide is unfortunate, but definitely not wrong.

I had 3 friends (that I know of) choose suicide in the 80s and 90s over dying of AIDS, I would not presume to second guess their decisions.

I also had a friend suicide via AIDS. That one is a little tougher to contemplate.

Not wrong, but sad a person chooses to do it. It sometimes is a cry for help, one that if successful is quite irreversible Undecided

RE: Is suicide wrong?
I suffered a psychological trauma on my birthday in 2007 that almost ended in my suicide. I am extremely glad I somehow recomposed myself and got a grip. Life is short, and is interesting. It frustrates me to see anybody take their own life. I do think it shortchanges yourself, and it's inconsiderate of others.

It's entirely determined by context. People have the right to do as they wish with their own lives, but sometimes our responsiblity that we have created necessitates staying alive. For example, if you kill yourself when you have young kids that are dependent upon you, it is wrong.

I also think it's wrong when people do it to weasle out of a situation they put themselves in, like that Castro guy that kept those girls in captivity but killed himself in prison. That's just cowardice exemplified.

Otherwise, if someone determines their life is not worth living, who am I to say they must stay alive? That being said, I don't advocate it, and it is definitley not something that should be done without a lot of contemplation.

I think it's often selfish but as FNM said, it depends entirely on context.

Morally, suicide in and of itself isn't wrong IMO.

RE: Is suicide wrong?
I would only attempt 12 Steppers with the promise to myself that if it were worse than what I was doing (and I fully, totally and completely expected it to be), I would commit suicide forthwith.

Except for when Brian died, sobriety has been better, frequently much better. And killing myself when Brian died would have been EXTREMELY inappropriate in considering how fiercely and bravely Brian fought his illness.
