A Serious Question For Theists
RE: A Serious Question For Theists
Apparently there isn't a point because you agree with me. 'Empiricism is essential where it applies'. Now taking belief into account, if you actually care if what you believe is true or not and not just how it makes you feel, empiricism is the best way to determine the truth. Evaluating evidence and coming to conclusions based on the evidence. Oh yea, and there is no such things as an 'overdependence' on empiricism.
'The more I learn about people the more I like my dog'- Mark Twain

'You can have all the faith you want in spirits, and the afterlife, and heaven and hell, but when it comes to this world, don't be an idiot. Cause you can tell me you put your faith in God to put you through the day, but when it comes time to cross the road, I know you look both ways.' - Dr House

“Young earth creationism is essentially the position that all of modern science, 90% of living scientists and 98% of living biologists, all major university biology departments, every major science journal, the American Academy of Sciences, and every major science organization in the world, are all wrong regarding the origins and development of life….but one particular tribe of uneducated, bronze aged, goat herders got it exactly right.” - Chuck Easttom

"If my good friend Doctor Gasparri speaks badly of my mother, he can expect to get punched.....You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others. There is a limit." - Pope Francis on freedom of speech

RE: A Serious Question For Theists
I'd say my faith experience was the overabundance of notknowingism. Don't bother looking it up, I made it up.
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!

Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.

Dead wrong.  The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.

Quote:Some people deserve hell.

I say again:  No exceptions.  Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it.  As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.

I wish some people would actually do some investigation before dismissing something. Such a glowing example of critical thinking going on here.

Please elaborate. Easy to make such vague statements.

Better to admit ignorance than to pretend you have the truth.

Or, to put it another way, better to be intellectually honest than to lie to yourself just for false comfort.

If you are following the discussion, see lucky alluding to it in her comment above, so why she doesn't think the subject is clear is puzzling....

Scientism

Not a made up word. An accurate description of an over dependence on empirical evidence. Exactly what esq said was the majority view of atheists and their reason to dismiss theism.

Over dependence? Please give us what you consider to be an acceptable level of empiricism. Something tells me it applies to everything but your particular brand of theism. I'm open to being wrong in my assumption though.
