Life after death?

Life after death?
I found this article today from a site I follow. It's nonreligious and pertains to 8 things that happen after we die. I don't necessarily believe it's true - it would be nice for sure, but once I left my religion, all thoughts of an afterlife were, put to rest. However, I would still be interested in what other atheists think about this subject.

This is as much a fairytale as any god. I'm sorry, but so far the news is that when we die, we die. Our selves are our very physical brains. No brain, no me.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god.  If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.

Why do people always claim to have received great knowledge or spiritual wisdom from the dead? Does every janitor turn into Descartes when he dies? Where are all the ghosts that give shitty, stupid advice, the sorts of advice that might have led to them becoming ghosts in the first place? Sigh.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Well from my perspective once I die I will simply cease to exist. I like to think I'll become a part of the universe, it is a thought that gives me comfort. I do not blame you for believing in an afterlife or not, but to me it is just wishful thinking
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you

Good points.

I'm a newer atheist and don't really have an opinion either way. I see you guys are pretty clear and passionate about what you think!

RE: Life after death?
Before becoming an atheist, for many years I was asking myself could "god" be something else.
My reasoning hinged entirely on the notion that nature may have had intelligent design. Not intelligent as in self aware, but intelligence which comes with existence.
I therefore was comfortable for a while with life, death, soul, reincarnation, etc, as these were natural events of existence.
Nature recycles life as an efficiency mechanism. nothing more, nothing less. (and still fall within the laws of thermodynamics)
Therefore my "god" which couldn't be worshipped, was just a part of the natural laws of existence.
My "god" is not human, is not moralistic, is an unconscious "thing" just doing its job without realising it's doing it job.
If ever there was a "god", this would make sense to me.

But in effect, I am sort of describing nature itself, so I brushed it aside.
This is not the god which religious people need or want. They "need" to have a higher purpose of why we are here.
A lot of people won't and can't accept that we are life for the sake of it, for no predetermined reason. They are not mature enough to cope with that notion. Enter "Jesus".
No God, No fear.
Know God, Know fear.

If there's life after death I'm sure that you'll have to pay some heavy taxes.

Just as bat-shit crazy as any other life-after-death bullshit. The truth is, nobody knows. I don't care how fervently they claim to. Whatever happens after we die (all evidence points to nothing), we won't find out 'til it happens so there's no reason to fuss over it now.

If there is some kind of afterlife. I hope it's not eternal. That would truly be hell.
