If that question was directed at me, yes the original post is completely serious. Maybe "Charles Krauthammer says so" sounded flippant, but it wasn't meant to.

Iran will soon have the nukes and, yes, they have a lunatic end-times theology that involves creating apocalyptic nuclear war to bring back the 12th Imam. These are not people you can negotiate with, because they do not have the concept of rational self-interest. They are complete religious looney tunes. Total nutjobs. Barking. Nuclear. Mad.

I'm old enough to remember hearing the same claims about Pakistan. They were religious fanatics who were certain to nuke India, even if it meant their own destruction. Some Pakistanis in the government said as much.

Turns out they're not as suicidal as they make themselves out to be. It is an entirely different mindset to be the one who convinces someone to blow themselves up than to be the one who can be convinced to do so. The people who would have the capability to launch a nuclear strike from Iran are not the people who can be convinced to blow themselves up, they're the ones who convince other people to sacrifice themselves.

Well, at least that's an argument. Better than the other looney tune cheerleaders here. Prudence would make us prevent any Muslim group from acquiring nuclear technology. Two wrongs don't make a right. Any Muslim group with nukes is dangerous because of their martyrdom doctrine.

But there's still the critical difference between Pakistan (Sunni) and Iran (Shia). It's the Shia who have the apocalyptic genocidal eschatological fantasies about some Imam down a well.

You underestimate the power of (belief in) God. When it comes to existential nuclear threats, it's madness not to err on the side of caution with Muslims, especially lunatic Shia Muslims.

Even the Koran acknowledges "Jihâd (holy fighting in Allâh's Cause) is ordained for you (Muslims) though you dislike it ...". But a certain percentage will "fling their dates aside" and choose martyrdom. You can't say for sure that those with their hands on the button are immune from the martyrdom virus.

This is nonsense. While some religious nutbags are present there, even the ruling clerics understand the need to ease the sanctions lest their grip on power go down the shitter.
