Archaeologists in Greece have discovered a vast tomb that they believe is connected with the reign of the warrior-king Alexander the Great, who conquered vast swathes of the ancient world between Greece and India.

The tomb, dating to around 300 BC, may have held the body of one of Alexander's generals or a member of his family. It was found beneath a huge burial mound near the ancient site of Amphipolis in northern Greece.

Archaeologists, who began excavating the site in 2012, hope to fully explore the tomb by the end of the month to determine exactly who was buried there. The site is being guarded by police while archaeologists continue their excavations.

Catherine Peristeri, the head of the ancient monuments department in northern Greece, said some of Alexander's generals and admirals had links to the area around the ancient city of Amphipolis. It was also the place where his wife, Roxana, and son, were killed in 311BC by Cassander, a Macedonian general who fought over the empire after Alexander the Great's death.

HOPES are rising that a massive Ancient Greek tomb has remained untouched after the huge stones sealing its entrance were found to be intact.

Excavations have been conducted around the entrance to the 300BC tomb at Amphipolis in central Macedonia, constructed in the era of the conqueror Alexander the Great.

At 590m wide, it is the largest burial of its kind ever discovered in Greece.

Indications are the tomb’s ancient defences may have held.

That does sound interesting. I've never been big into archaeology, but it's always cool to find things from the past.

Wasn't his tomb found in Alexandria? It's the tomb the Christians now claim for one of the Apostles.

His tomb there was almost worshiped in antiquity.

Supposedly he was entombed in Alexandria. In 365 AD the city was heavily damaged by an earthquake/tsunami which destroyed the Royal Quarter of the city - including the palaces. The supposition is that Alex's tomb was nearby and met a similar fate.

The last reference of his tomb comes from the 5th century CE around the same time the Christian tomb is first mentioned.

Certainly xtians stole pagan sites and converted them to their own use. No doubt about that.

Alexandria was heavily damaged in 365...and there were additional seismic and political issues (not the least being the muslim conquest) but the city was not destroyed. Tectonic changes seem to have led to a permanent change in the city's shoreline.

As noted, in 1995 a French archaeological team diving in what is now the harbor found evidence of the royal compound under water. The Pharos Lighthouse was originally built on a small island just off the coast that to which Alexander built a mole to form the harbor. The mole was destroyed, too.

Author of The Quest for the Tomb of Alexander the Great and several academic papers on Alexander’s tomb says that in the recently discovered Greek tomb might be buried the mother of Alexander the Great.

The Taj Mahal and Mausoleum at Halicarnassus demonstrate that royalty was not above going overboard in expressions of honor for dead relatives.


Anyway, Olympias is a possibility - the story goes though that she was defeated, murdered and denied burial by the victor, Cassander, so an opulent burial might seem unlikely. Alexander's wife, Roxana, also died around this time....perhaps helped along by the aforementioned Cassander...but an opulent funeral there might have served Macedonian politics.

We shall see.

It isn't Alexander. It might have been a tomb that he prepared for himself but never used but then, why build it in Amphipolis instead of Pella which was the Macedonian capital?

Archaeology is magnificent. Especially when you rip it away from xtian shits who want to use it to prove their fucking bible.
