As far as I can see, they are a no-too-bad disco-era band, but I wouldn't say they should be immortalized as music gods or anything. I don't see depth in the construction of the songs, or especially deep meaning in the lyrics, or instrumental genius. I just don't "get it."

But that's the beauty of art, I guess-- all our lives can benefit by finding those sounds that get our own neurons tingling, and it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

You'll have to say if this is raining on your parade, Brian, but I agree with bennyboy on this one. Musically what sets them apart is harmony, but the rhythms are so relentlessly upbeat and cheesy. It made sense for disco I guess but there is a reason that didn't stick.

Two of the gals are so butch!

I never said all ABBA lyrics were deep. But again until you listen to all their songs you do not understand the real range they have. The British version of American Idol had all the contestants doing ABBA songs one episode. Replicating their music is as hard, and their voices, forget it.

Benny and Bjorn are classically trained, same with Metallica.

Dancing Queen isn't going to make you a Harvard philosopher, no. But there is really much more to ABBA than what people understand.

I've had lots of favorite bands, often simultaneously. The Beatles in my youth. R.E.M. was huge. Right now I'm loving me some Postmodern Jukebox.

Oh, and I'm really appreciating Toyko Pardise Ska band which Rasetsu turned me onto on these forums. Love their collaborations with Puffy AmiYumi.

Have a Nice Life. Specifically the album Deathconsciousness. The Unnatural World was okay but it didn't really have any memorable moments besides the part where they were interviewing that child on the mental ward (and that part wasn't even music but it did give me chills).

I do not have a favorite band.

I tend to prefer single artists.

Any human being that does not like ABBA can suck my left pinky toe. That or they simply don't like them.

I like ABBA, they're just not my favorite, but they definitely have a neat sound. Don't get discouraged because a few people don't like them though. One of my favorite bands is Placebo and most people I know have no clue who they are unless they know the "Friend with weed" tid bit.

I like nearly everything but gospel and the type of heavy heavy metal that you can't tell what the singer is babbling on about, in which case I wish they'd just get rid of their singers. It's weird because I like listening to oriental music when eating Chinese and will typically not eat at a Chinese buffet that plays anything other than oriental music, even if I can't understand a damn thing they are singing about. Hell, I guess they could be singing "we spit in your rice and noodles, and now you eat it with a smile. "
