This story has blown up in the NFL's face, and it might not be finished blowing up. It seems as if the NFL's (and the Baltimore Raven's) contention that it did not see the video from inside the elevator is a lie. I figure that reporters are scrambling to find some way to confirm that both the league and the team had the video (Sports Illustrated's Peter King had implied in an early report that the league had seen the video, and tried to clumsily walk back the claim this afternoon). If they do confirm this, the league is facing a serious backlash, not the least from all of those reporters whose glamorous "NFL insider" status just became "you're a shill for a despicable bunch of woman-hating assholes."

The issue of domestic violence among sports professionals is now front-and-center and may remain so for some time, especially in light of situations like this one and the brutal assault by an MMA fighter, who savagely beat his ex-girlfriend for the crime of being his ex-girlfriend. The NFL attempted to have its cake and eat it, too. They may wind up choking on it.

What's an NFL?

If you describe yourself as “atheist,” some people will say, “Don’t you mean ‘agnostic’?” I have to reply that I really do mean atheist, I really do not believe that there is a god; in fact, I am convinced that there is not a god (a subtle difference). I see not a shred of evidence to suggest that there is one ... etc., etc. It’s easier to say that I am a radical atheist, just to signal that I really mean it, have thought about it a great deal, and that it’s an opinion I hold seriously." - Douglas Adams (and I echo the sentiment)

I'll take the NFL's woeful mismanagement of this situation a step further. Nobody learned anything new with the TMZ release; Rice previously admitted to knocking his then fiance unconscious. I get the fact that seeing the assault can make it seem more horrific; however, yesterday's actions by the Ravens and NFL should have been the initial punishment instead of the two game ban.

A CEO caught kicking a dog on an elevator results in media coverage of the outcry and the CEO's eventual resignation. A man concusses a woman and drags her body out of an elevator and most shrug their shoulders and accept a two game ban. Everyone will be indignant now, but this is the way it should have been to begin with; whether the knockout blow was seen or not.

What the fuck is it with the Ravens and players named Ray?

Driving into work, there was a news briefing on the radio airing a snippet of what the ravens coach had to say...

It was so profound...let me see if I can get all the details..."I hope they work it out, I'll be praying for them." (he said more but that's the gist)

Work it out? Clearly, he knows nothing about abuse. She needs to leave him and he needs to be in prison.

If he had knocked out a total stranger in public, he'd have been arrested. Just shows that women are still not valued as they should be, in our society and that if you tag the label "domestic" onto abuse, it's ok.

Sad! Sad

He was arrested, and convicted (guilty plea) and sentenced. I think the difference is that if it had been a stranger, he was more likely to get jail time (1-3 years was on the table, they went with a much lighter sentence).

I agree that the reaction by the team and league are inexcusable. Rice's explanation was that she had attacked him and thus he struck in self-defense, but she's not a physically imposing person. Rice stands 5' 8" tall and weighs around 215 lbs, and as a pro-athlete his build is thick with muscle. Palmer appears shorter, and based on her physique may be less than half of Rice's weight. The idea that he had to knock her unconscious out of some attempt to defend himself from attack is laughable, but until the video came out the league/team thought that they could just shrug their shoulders and say "we don't really know what happened." As if a guy bludgeoning his girlfriend and dragging her around like a sack of garbage might be mitigated by a few seconds of corroborating video.

Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Holy cow, I didn't know all that. I just looked up on google the timeline of events. Wow.

The saddest fact of all was that she still went through with marrying him. After the assault. Abuse is a hard thing to understand. Ive been in abusive relationships and they're hard to leave because you don't think you deserve better.

She had that mindset, sadly. Love has nothing to do with accepting abuse.

Thank you for those facts!

The NFL has a personal conduct policy. They take action to protect their image, because the NFL is a multi-billion dollar business. They suspend people for a bevy of things, regardless of the legal action taken---so long as the player's personal conduct is detrimental to the league. Case in point: Ben Roethlisberger was accused of sexual assault, but never charged by the police. He served a 4 game suspension.

The NFL will protect its image. So Ray Rice punching his fiance unconscious has a lot to do with the NFL.
Call me anti big brother, but I think what happened in that elevator is between mr and mrs rice and the police if either party is inclined. The rest of us should bugger off.

The nfl promotes and awards multi million dollar contracts to the biggest and fastest Incredible Hulk type of people they can find. Why is anyone surprised when 'hulk smash?' That is what everything in his life is geared toward, granted their needs to be a line drawn and if the hulk can't stay with in the lines then he needs help not sanctions, and ridicule.

How much help do you think mr and mrs rice will get now that the money is gone?

Or maybe she figures 40 million dollars will help soften the next blow, if things escalates the way they did.

First, assault in any form is a societal matter and not simply a private matter between individuals.

Second, you come across as being extremely ignorant when it comes to domestic violence considerations (Intimate Partner Violence).

Or she's like many abused women, suffering from low self-esteem and insisting to herself that she is in love with a man who settled an argument by giving her a concussion. She may very well be rationalizing that the money makes the ill-treatment worthwhile. She released a statement earlier today where she almost seems to embrace her victim status:
Quote:"I woke up this morning feeling like I had a horrible nightmare, feeling like I'm mourning the death of my closest friend. But to have to accept the fact that it's reality is a nightmare in itself. No one knows the pain that the media & unwanted [opinions] from the public has caused my family. To make us relive a moment in our lives that we regret every day is a horrible thing. To take something away from the man I love that he has worked his ass of for all his life just to gain ratings is horrific. THIS IS OUR LIFE! What don't you all get. If your intentions were to hurt us, embarrass us, make us feel alone, take all happiness away, you've succeeded on so many levels. Just know we will continue to grow & show the world what real love is! Ravensnation we love you!"

Maybe in some backwards socialist country it is, but here in 'Merica we (for the most part) give the 'assulted' the option to press charges or not.

why because I do not support the group concensus?

I simply value personal choice over that of soceity telling a man and woman how they should live.

I get and acknoweledge these facts. I think they should be made avaiable to all who seek them. However at the same time for someone who chooses to stay in an abusive relationship should have the right to stay, and you and the rest of soceity should just mind your own business.

Again in this particual instance Mr.Rice's woman married him even after the KO. She obviously saw some redeeming quality to the man (40 million dollars) and decided to help him work on himself. All the while having the ablity to turn rice over if and when she has had enough and or needs outside help.[/quote]

if any of what you said here is true she has a problem herself seeking out and marrying men who are prone to violence.. The only difference is now they/she does not have access to 40 million dollars to find some sort of resolution.
