Now that this thread has been resurrected from the dead, it gives me two thoughts.

First, it reminds me of something Friedrich Nietzsche wrote:

"That which does not kill us makes us stronger."

It is funny that Nietzsche was such a Christian!

Actually, that doesn't. He could have said any number of sensible things before his mental collapse, and earlier sensible statements would not have been rendered false by his later mental collapse.

In this case, though, what he said was drivel. Somehow, it is said in a way that makes people like it and believe it, even when they know it is false. But it is drivel, for the reason I stated in my post.

This realistically unsound biblical notion has been weighing on my mind lately.

I heard the line in a movie, followed by a rather deserving sound of dismissal.

The fact that people are daily broken and brought to their knees in utter despair proves that if any sort of deity could be behind the utter horror we experience on a daily basis, then we are clearly given more than we can handle.

And I do not want to read a retarded Christian retort that the deity was testing, as though a divine being should have any right to test anyone so cruelly. The job of any truly divine being, not because I am of a divine mind but instead of a rather moralistic one, is to ensure the happiness and security of its creation rather than playing silly playground games that derive from pure psychosis.

Any truly divine being does not ensure an imperfect world. Only a human one does. A human world creates an imperfect divinity that loves to protest its perfection; i.e. god.

Thank you for bringing this up. I hear this all the time too and honestly, I'm sick of it being used by Xians to explain away bullshit. I've had more of my share of issues in my life and I certainly don't think that I should have had to go through even one tenth of what I was subjected to. Abuse as a child, abuse as an adult, having to fight in Supreme court for my oldest, struggling my entire adult life. The list goes on and on. For a Xian to say that I was being tested by god just makes me furious because honestly, I didn't ask to be mistreated as a child. What the hell kind of test is abuse to a child? Ugh. I could just slap religious folk in the face.... with a brick.

You're misinterpreting what I said.

The quote, from Twilight of the Idols is: "Out of life's school of war: What does not kill me makes me stronger."

Note, whatever caused the mental collapse did not kill him. However, as evidenced by the fact that it not only happened, but he never recovered from it in any real capacity (indeed, he only got worse), it did not make him stronger.

If you inferred from my words something along the lines of "Nietzsche went crazy, therefore you can feel free to dismiss anything he said," you are wrong.
