Alleged Contradictions - Sabbath

Alleged Contradictions - Sabbath
Quote:"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." -- Exodus 20:8

"One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind." -- Romans 14:5

Lets briefly consider the Christian sabbath. To the Jews it had been not only a religious regulation but also a law of the land. It is interesting to note here that the sabbath wasn't observed by the priests. The Jews have an expression; "There is no sabbath in the sanctuary." - (The Temple, by A. Edersheim, 1874, p. 152.) (Matthew 12:5) and infants were circumcized on the sabbath if the sabbath happened to fall eight days after he was born. (Leviticus 12:2, 3 / John 7:22)

Jesus grew up under the law, but he also noted that it was lawful to do fine things on the sabbath (Matthew 12:12) this caused some problems for some religious leaders because they had a religious idea of what the purpose of the law was while missing the heart of the law. They were over zealous.

Christ was the end of the law (Romans 10:4) but some people didn't (don't) recognize Christ as such.

It is important to note here that though Christians were not under the law of Moses in a religious or legal (of the land) sense yet they could still observe the sabbath.

Colosians 2:16-17 - Therefore let no man judge you in eating and drinking or in respect of a festival or of an observance of the new moon or of a sabbath, (Footnote: or 'sabbaths.') for those things are a shadow of the things to come, but the reality belongs to the Christ.

What happened is that there was a change, rather than a contradiction. The Jews rejected Christ - the Messiah, the son of God. The King of a kingdom that was no longer represented by Israel and its Kings.

A brief aside regarding the 'Christian Sabbath.'

Not until 321 C.E. did Constantine decree the first day of the week (rather than the 7th), Sunday from the Latin dies Solis, a title associated with astrology and sun worship as the 'sabbath' for everyone but farmers. Clark’s Biblical Law says: "Constantine the Great passed an edict commanding all judges and inhabitants of cities to rest on the venerable day of the Sun."

The Christian bible has the lineage of Jesus Christ twice in it but they differ considerably ... which one is correct?

I posted this earlier on the lineage of Jesus. Often there is thought to be a contradiction between the Luke and Matthew accounts due to Joseph's father Heli. Here is the post, let me know if you have any questions or comments. Either here or there. Cool

The narrative of Daystar is a Christian version of what happened at the beginning of Christianity but has very little to do with historic reality.
It is interesting to see that all what we call abrahamic religions subdue
history and even have no problem to contort history to their believes.
Christians put the blame of the death of Jesus on the Jews who consider Christianity as something close to paganism and the Moslems are sure that the Jews stole from them the Bible and consider all Christians as Crusaders

Now about the double lineage of Christ it had to begin from king David because some prophets predicted that the Messaiah will be an offspring of his dynasty. It was perhaps politically corect to say that at their time-the amount of bribe they got for this saying from the Authorities we'll never know.
Taking into consideration that king David lived about 900 years before
and that there will pass other 2000 years before the appearance of Google it is easy to see why we got only double lineage and not even more lineages of Christ.
By the way the authors of the Gospel knew very well from the first book Genesis of the Bible that the narrative of the six days of creation are also doubled in many points.
So if God himself who wrote the Bible by the hand of his servant Moses
permitted him self to tell the creation in a double version why would it be not permitted to do so to the first Appostles?

Is this a joke?

My girlfriend is a Seventh Day Adventist and is very strict about the Sabbath, and it sorta pisses me off.

It's interesting that you bring these passages to my attention. In Matthew 12:12 is says it is lawful to do "fine things" on the Sabbath. What exactly is meant by this?

I'm also curious of where in the Bible it describes the specifics of the Sabbath(sundown to sundown, etc) and how our changing systems of time-keeping have affected the days of the week.

ROFL!

All sounds well until you get to the bit about "2000 years until the invention of Google". I had to read it 3 times to make sure I hadn't misread.
Joseph, did you put that in there just to make sure we were paying attention? :p

What's wrong with mentioning Google? I thought the point he was alluding to was that the sharing of information was poor at best back then, hence all the contradictions. I don't see how using a rather clever (imho) metaphor makes it a joke.

Here is an answer: http://www.infidels.org/library/historic...hap11.html

As usual you're just attempting to shoehorn your views into a form that makes them appear reasonable.

Who cares about Jesus? The man died over 2000 years ago.
Who should really care about him in particular so much to this day if it weren't simply for the fact that he's in the bible?
Its like Bill Hicks said: "[...]People say "Bill, quit talking about Kennedy man. It was a long time ago, just let it go, alright? It's a long time ago, just forget it." I'm like, alright, then don't bring up Jesus to me. As long as we're talking shelf life here..."
