"God" is a hand job. Got it.

Bullshit. False equivocation.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Yeah Aoi, you are missing the sequence.
1)Job was in fear (unbeknown to the devil) doing sacrifices for his kids was a symptom of it.
2) the devil presented himself to God
3) God said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job?"
4) in the conversation ensuing, God said, "Look- he is in your hand" - Present tense expressed.

Ah now I see thanks. So the devil forgot to torment a person who should be tormented as he feared God, so God kindly reminded the devil to go get him and used this opportunity to ensure Job feared him....wait, I still don't get it!

It's a worrying thing to have a story that basically says that even if you do EVERYTHING right, god could still let you get tormented to make sure you keep doing it. Who could trust someone like that. I know god supposedly rewarded him with twice as much stuff, but I doubt Job ever trusted the guy again. You're damned if you do, and damned if you don't. Disobey, and you go to hell. Obey, and you get to go to heaven where you keep groveling for eternity so he doesn't throw you into hell anyway.

Much of the OT is devoted to trying to explain suffering. It's a venerable philosophical cause. The problem is, the OT's explanations aren't much better than "because." In Job the answer really appears to be "because." In later books, it's because Israel turned from god. I like "just because" better. At least the book itself doesn't blame Job, even if his so called friends do.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.

It's amusing to realize that the authors of the very texts these christers are pointing to expressed a viewpoint not entirely unlike mine our yours Chad - an antitheist and an apatheist. Remember, though, these are jews were talking about. They have a history (and strong literary tradition) of struggling against and in spite of their god.

Being the chosen people doesn't seem so great. It seems to have brought them more hardship than triumph.
