If these differences are so minor, why did Christians spend so long murdering each other over them?

The problem is that both the Bible and the Qur'an have select verses that can be used to justify a vast array of divergent views. Christians always maintain that the Bible is 'miraculous' in its consistency (66 books, 40 authors, 1500 years, perfect harmony) but this is far from the case, and Islam is really no better. If you want verses that promote peace, you can certainly find them; if you want verses that condone hatred, those are there too. Of course, this requires that the belivers pick and choose, disregarding a whole host of other verses that contradict the view.

Fun game: pick a couple of the peace-loving verses from the Qur'an and a couple of the war-mongering verses from the Bible. Change the word 'Allah' to 'Jehovah,' and see if Christians can tell you which are from which book.
