Does Atheism have a Generally accepted Symbol (and do we need one?)

I also don't think it's a bad idea for those that choose to advertise that facet of their person; to each her own. I do have a t-shirt that I have no problem wearing in public that reads, "God's busy, may I help you?", containing a picture of the devil.

There are many things about me that cannot possibly be known without conversation. If the topic of religion comes up in conversation, people will understand soon enough and with no doubt that I am atheist.

FUCK THAT SHIT . We are a team, bitches. Atheists vs The Religious Fuckers GRRRRRRRRR .

you probably wouldn't have became an atheist with out all the atheists that fought to spread the message of atheism across years of religious dominance . Fuck yeah we are a team and we need a symbol that represent us .

To answer the question in the thread title: No, and no.

We're not a clubhouse, just a group of people that happen to agree about a single question.

Yeah, it's interesting. I'm not sure. Of course, the only reason we even need the word atheist is because a large proportion of the world is caught up in insane delusions. I could see an argument for solidarity of having a symbol, until such time as its not required any more.

I find it hard to gauge what the reaction would be, but I wonder if it would help with coming out to see people displaying it unashamedly. And people would have a harder time demonising someone who is acting perfectly reasonably, and not how their pastor tells them atheists act.

I think I'd be happy to wear one in theory, although in England it's not a big deal.

What about Jesus impaled on a giant penis instead of a cross? Or maybe the A thing, that's cool.

People can make all sorts of symbols for anything they want, but it only has significance to the people that buy into it.

And no, atheists are not on a "team". There are plenty of atheists that I want nothing to do with, and I certainly wouldn't want to be seen as on the same "team" as them. We just happen to agree on a singular question.

I wish I could see that (my work computer has issues loading some images), but I like the filename.

I like the idea of a symbol for the one idea that we all share in common. There's no need to trivialize it, that particular idea is a big deal. Atheists generally like to distance themselves from groups; we tend to liken that to a religion. But it's also a reason why politically, our voice remains unheard, even though we are a non-trivial portion of the population. It's okay to come together, and if a symbol helps us with recognition and normalization, I'm all for it.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

But there is no political voice other than not wanting religion mixed into political affairs. Otherwise there are as many political views as there are atheists. I wouldn't even piss on Ayn Rand if she was on fire, but others might, while still others may even try to resuscitate her.
