It was a dumb thing to do during the cold war. Our over the top reaction to cuban nationalizing American private assets drove Castro from wanting to be a semi-independent, non-aligned, fence straddling communist state like Yogoslavia, to wanting to host Soviet missiles.

50 years of failure is no reason to change strategy, huh douchebag?

embargo against Cuba might have been a bad idea to start with, embargo against red states is long overdue.

The justification has been that Florida is a swing state and contains a large population of Cuban exiles who hate the Castros.

I pretty much agree with Obama here, the embargo simply hasn't been effective at removing the Castros from power and it is probably time to take a different tact. However I am also thinking that Obama just handed Florida to the Republicans in 2016. 2016 is going to be about Ohio now me thinks.

A cornerstone of our policy concerning Cuba has been differing levels of trade embargoes. As with every other embargo we've been party to, the ones who suffer under them are the everyday citizens not the rulers nor the elite classes. That makes us guilty of gross cruelty and further shames me to be an American.

The Cold War.

This.

U.S.-Soviet relations drive the policies of, well, just about everything of the time period up until the Soviet Union collapsed. It certainly didn't help that Khrushchev and Castro wanted to park nukes a few score miles off the coast of Florida (not that the USA was blameless, don't get me wrong, far from it).

The fact of the matter, though is that Cuba, if it ever did, does not pose any threat to the USA. The Cuban people are the ones who suffer - and they were never our enemies.
