It's particularly interesting how religion seems to thrive with poverty and ignorance. Have a look at the documentary "God Loves Uganda".

And yes, there are plenty of documentaries out there that make your bile rise. But a personal moment of revulsion I will never forget was when the pope visited the Americas in 1992 and gave a speech about the church bringing the native population the "light of the cross".
