Supreme Court to decide on marriage equality
January 16, 2015 at 5:54 pm
(This post was last modified: January 16, 2015 at 5:56 pm by Ryantology.)
Article.
It is the beginning of the end. I don't see the Court contradicting a decision of their own as impactful as last year's ruling on DOMA. Kennedy makes it 5-4, or the overwhelming majority of circuit court decisions. Equality will soon become legal reality nationwide in the U.S. I think the question becomes, do the bigots have anything left in the tank? Can they delay the inevitable any more than they have?

Let's hope justice prevails. Considering these are, in America, elite judges I'm trusting they'll have rational minds to make the right call.
The constitutional court in my country also ruled in favour of marriage equality.

In my country we had a great supreme court decision yesterday. Gay and lesbian couples are allowed to adopt without restrictions. Excluding them has been ruled unconstitutional.
As far as marriage goes, we still have a way to go. We have a civil union in place that at least gives them the same legal rights as married couples, but the conservatives and rightwingers still fight actual marriage with claws and teeth.

But...but...if you let gay people get married, then they'll have the same rights as...whaddyacallem...regular people. Next thing you know, they'll want to vote, drive cars, and go to cinemas like everybody else.
All I know is that I would never let any sister of mine marry some gay guy.

I am certain they will make an attempt with the usual ignorant gusto that they possess more in abundance than anything resembling genuine love or acceptance.

No doubt that they'll try and try and try. The question is, does it matter?
The American people are decisively in favor of this, and the SC is only catching up to confirm this sentiment.

Being a gay man (albeit from the UK where we already have equal marriage) I'm really hoping it swings in the favour of equality, of course
With that being said, I do think it's important to remember that marriage isn't the only gay rights issue on the table. Some people seem to get this mentality that gay marriage suddenly means we're happy and tolerant. It's important to note that to many gays, especially poorer and/or ethnic minority gays, there are more very pressing issues like healthcare, safety from hate crimes, proper education on safe sex etc that also need addressing.
I don't mean to put a dampner on things, marriage equality is of course important and of course I want it, I just think it's easy to lose focus on the bigger picture here is all.

This is curious - Usually the procedure is: 1 - First legalize marriage equality 2 - Second legalize adoption
People usually accept more gay marriage than adoption because in the first there's only two consenting adults but in the second they are hurting the kid (their argument)... It's really weird that adoption got legalized first.
In my country gay marriage is fully legal, there was a motion in the parliament for adoption but it was bailed out by everyone including socialists (center left) - The only ones who voted in favour were the communists
