RE: What do believers say when you ask or tell them..

Presuppositions can be and often are wrong.
The Romans looked for signs of coming events in the livers of sheep and invariably found what they were looking for.
They went though life thinking the gods sent them signs all the time. If they stubbed there toe their 'presuppositions' meant that it was a bad day to bet on the horses.
Its best not to presuppose and only go where the evidence takes you.
On this basis I can say with a reasonable amount of certainty that there is no god.
You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid.

It's not repression though. My sexuality may appear to be smaller than most (even that's funny), but I would argue that most of my peers have swollen, enlarged and slightly unhealthy sexualities. Is it repressive to want to engage in a mutually fulfilling relationship with a girl? Is it repressive to hold a high enough value of yourself and your body to not act as a man-slut? Is it repressive to consider love, and by proxy sex, as nearly sacred? How can I go to the bar and 'pick up' a 'slump buster' without objectifying both her and myself? Is that a repressive and unhealthy attitude? I was not really sexualized as a child, I had my own weird experiences, but nothing worse than the average.
I hate porn for the same reason I hate drugs, Pharma, America, TV, video games... Because of what they have done to me.
I appreciate your post though SEA, although now my response it out of place. You are quite kind to me, and I thank you for it.
Why is pippy talking about his sexual childhood...?
Thanks,
-Pip

I think it's admirable pip. It's typically a long and lonely road going against the grain, whatever the goal.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

For once I agree with Tacky, on face value,as in acting from committed moral principle.
I do not especially like porn, I find, it boring, unsubtle and rather pathetic. I really don't care what other adults do sexually as long as they break no laws.

I'm sure we've agreed at least in one other instance somewhere

Yair. I'm beginning to suspect we may agree on more than either of us would like to admit.

I appreciate that you appreciate my moral determination. I know it is the right thing to do, and I try not to be too preachy about it. Yes rather pathetic is a good description. Everyone of my peers thinks my moral standards are funny, laughable. But it falls under the old "If everyone jumped off a bridge..." That mass appeal does not relative truth make. There are a lot of people jumping off a lot of bridges these days, so much so that you are against the grain to just point out that that is dangerous and unhealthy... I love sentences with two that's in 'em.
Thanks again,
-Pip

Is that a repressive and unhealthy attitude? I was not really sexualized as a child, I had my own weird experiences, but nothing worse than the average. My answer to that is that it can be, though it is not necessarily. It is only repressive if the circumstances prevent you from performing your intent. Say that you want to engage in a mutually fulfilling relationship with a girl... and are kidnapped and imprisoned by a very sadistic woman who needed a sex slave for her underground country house (in her mind a 'dungeon'). This would be repression.
Say that you hold a high value to yourself and your body so as to not act as a "manslut?". <--not repression. Made incapable of doing so or to contradict your doing so: repression.
Say that you consider love, and 'by proxy' sex, as nearly sacred? <--Not repression. Circumstances forcing you to 'blaspheme' or otherwise perform actions against what you believe: repression.
This was the keynote difference I was trying to describe. And which I (perhaps inaccurately) assumed from your previous posts must have (or must be) occurring/occurred.
Quote:**************I hate porn for the same reason I hate drugs, Pharma, America, TV, video games... Because of what they have done to me.*********
"Because of what they have done to me." <-- Would that pertain to things not privy to fellow forum members, or can you define? (Asterisks at end)

Why is pippy talking about his sexual childhood...?
I'm secretly working for the government!
I don't know that I'm more kind to you than I am to anyone else :S Would that be to suggest that I'm quite kind to a number of people? :S <-- Has given out 40% of the the kudos given... so perhaps there's some truth to that... though there are people to whom I'm quite venomous indeed... and perhaps I spark between the lot
As for why you're talking about your sexual childhood (or rather as you seem to describe it, a lack of being a sexual childhood, though not necessarily accurate of course )... why not? I discuss just about anything (if not everything?)... but if you're worried about going "way-off-topic" in this thread, you could always make a thread about 'Repression' or whatever you find reason to discuss about your beliefs regarding whatever (or "necro" an old one with a new post that's still relevant)
@ the asterisks above: I can understand some of the reasons you hate porn, drugs, and America (though I don't know if I can fathom why a person would not like TV or video games... and I'm not sure I know what 'Pharma' even is)... and that isn't to suggest I share the same reasons as you (though some-moderate overlap is likely).
Edit: note: written at 04:22 my time... I consider the majority of the blame for anything "wrong" to be on my insomnia That includes this edited-in notice, which I am certain I made several 'mistakes' in... but which my sleepy brain doesn't quite know how to fix
Please give me a home where cloud buffalo roam
Where the dear and the strangers can play
Where sometimes is heard a discouraging word
But the skies are not stormy all day

Please give me a minute, I am looking forward to responding, but I am out of time tonight. Time to go to work and yell at kiddies to work faster...
Thanks,
