I used to drive for work all day and fell in love with NPR. Then I found podcasts.
Love Wait, Wait! and Radio Lab. I even listened to Car Talk.

I highly recommend Snap Judgment from NPR. This American Life.

Another podcast for psychology is Mental Illness Happy Hour. It's good, but can be triggering.

I understand the feeling. Mine are 15 and 17 and I am thrilled when they ask advice. They are bright questioning kids and I wonder how we managed to create them. They're going to do better in this world than their daddy and I did, but they still listen to us. I'm honored.

I love much of NPR though often they are much too liberal to be my only new source.

I'm going to buck the trend, but I love Splendid Table. You're all right that it caters to those with money to spend on food and an educated palate. But beyond charity, what better place to spend it? Music? Fine but also spendy. Art? Fine but also spendy. Travel? Fine but also spendy. And so on. Besides, much of what Splendid table discusses takes time rather than money. I listened when I ate much Top Ramon in college and still made use of the advice though my food budget was limited to say the least.

If i could afford to eat yuppie food every day, i would. As it is, I brew my own beer, grow my own veggies, and I've just started making my own tempeh as well. Next stop: growing mushrooms & making cheese (both require the basement we don't have yet).

NPR reporters do tend to be pretty liberal, but they make an effort to report both sides of most stories. Whenever i hear something that tweaks my truth-radar, I look online for multiple sources.

Just wait till your kids go off to college for a few years. You'll be amazed at how much like real people they are, and they'll be amazed at how much like real people you are!

Don't get me wrong, Jenny. My ass did not get as big as it is without me being a food lover. I adore good food. I just don't like the attitude I heard about stuff being "affordable" when it's a slice of cheese that costs $20 or more. It's like fashion advisers talking about "celebrity wardrobes for your budget" and it's a $150 top instead of a $300. WHO IS SPENDING $150 ON A SHIRT.
