There are other, more "robust" ways of killing people in an automated fashion...but you have to be pretty savvy with redstone and player detection mechanics. I've always wanted to build a Hive (ala Resident Evil) style structure complete with iris glass doors, sliders, detection, security panels, lockdown procedures, elevators, the whole bit. Would be trivial to do something like that in Tekkit ot FTB mod (though you could have a much beefier surveillance system)...but it is, in theory, doable in vanilla. Even actionless proximity and direction sensors out to half a k (but the compound itself would need a half k buffer to ensure detection with an operator at the panel - bringing the total size of the compound and associated wiring to a full k). In creative, it;s just an issue of time to build the space, but creative is for prototyping, the real fun is in a survival mp map....but then you have the issue of securing all of the resources and the persistence of the server map. It's definitely not a 1 man job. You know, there are actually alot of minecrafters on these boards...we really ought to get together and do something up righteous.

I don't think I've ever even used redstone. Is there a guide or something that gives me some tips on easy things to build with it?

Sure, there are guides. It can be one of the more complicated things in the game, but it allows you to modernize your place. Making passageways that open and close. Outdoor lights that come on at night, and go off during the day. And of course power rails for your rail system.

The guides are garbage, mostly user ticks. You understand computing from first principles yeah? It would take me 5 minutes on voice comms and in game to explain the mechanics you need to know (assuming familiarity with hardware at the very bottom). There are little mechanics based tricks...but they change with every patch, the core system of redstone is always the safest bet, especially if you want to invest time. You can build simple, compact functional systems..or perfect replicas of larger systems (that are inop due to chunk loading mechanics). This thing is cool, for example, but could be made much more compact, lots of wasted space and extraneous bus (impacts speed and what it can -actually do- as opposed to what it can do if you wait 5 minutes between inputs).

Then find a good server, or host it...and I'll just build you one.....lol? Ever wanted to design a machine but didn't have the resources, minecraft gives you that opportunity in a more visceral and pleasing fashion than an HDL does.

Yup, I built my 8bit on the (short lived) AF Minecraft server (display was shit, but I used to have a screenie of it up somewhere with "AF" (it's default state) on the two hex displays set up like a eyeball..lol - much better display mechanics now). It was in a complex with other arcade style games and calculators that another user and myself were working on.

I heard about how you could build computers in minecraft and all but never really actually looked into it in debt. looks pretty neat lol
Might give it a go soon.
Redstone, for me, is something I kinda barely just scratched the surface of. So far I got downpacked lights that turn on at night, despensers that shoot projectiles ex. Fireworks, firecharges, even eggs. Pretty basic things.
The main world im working on is a world I call "space age". In this world im bassicly trying to build structures and such that can be associated with space colonies, stations, rocket ships, maybe even an attempt at the USS Enterprise and other space/scifi related icons.
I've been "experimenting" with several building methods, so far nill.

What you'll find, is that a computer for a computers sake is only worthwhile if it;s a hobby of yours. Most thinks in MC can be handled to a very high level of automation without a computer. The only time you need a computer is when you're gonna go HAM on a facility that automates everything, tracks the output, processes and sorts the output, and monitors it;s own operation, facilities, and boundaries...it's a really, really big project.
You have to farm sheep like whoa, just for starters, and you'll need a large number of picks with the item drop enchant - many many squareskms of 3 stage strip tunnels at 11y a slime farm...etc......
(you also have to map chunk borders and scrub mobs from spawning with perfect illum - you don;t want a creeper busting a section of redwire at the 1200linear km. - the terraforming and cave explo alone takes days with a small team)
-you end up learning how to do everything in minecraft you never dreamt about just for the logistics.......at which point, most people quit before ever finishing their opus.
(still waiting on a server IP from yall hookers - I also play space engineers...think MC in spaaaaaace)
