A few years ago, I went to midnight mass for Christmas with my family. I usually love going to church on Christmas because it's so pretty and lit up and full of poinsettias... and the music- I used to sing Ave Maria every year (fun ego booster). So, I'm sitting there IN CHURCH WITH MY FAMILY ON CHRISTMAS, when the pastor starts ranting about how evil atheists are and how they hate god and Jesus, blah blah blah. I could just feel my face getting redder and redder. I held my tongue through the entire service, but at the end, when the pastor was standing in the doorway, shaking babies and kissing hands, I couldn't help myself. I whispered, only to the pastor, "I wonder how it feels knowing an evil atheist is in your midst right this second," shook his hand, and enjoyed his stutter and red face as he greeted the rest of my family.

After being on this forum you should have thought about the responses to Christians here and thought, fair enough and let well enough alone, don't you think. It wasn't the fault of the priest an atheist found the way to a Christian service that has especially deep meaning to us. Do you really think he expected one to show up, obviously not. When you travel into the enemy camp you should expect such things to happen, Christians here do.

Interesting you comment on my actions (spending time with my family on Christmas- which is also deep and meaningful to me, as well as my Christian family) rather than the actions of a pastor demeaning atheists during Christmas mass. You don't think he had anything better to preach about on Christmas? Even my grandfather (hardcore Christian) was pissed because he felt the pastor had ruined the Christmas service with his negativity.

Gawds, you're intellectually dishonest.

Why do you want to be our enemy, just because we disagree on certain issues? Do you derive some special frisson out of it or something?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

First of all you have no idea that she didn't allude to it with emphasis that wasn't actually there and further more truth is truth, provocation not necessary to make a statement, get real. It's actually the disbelief in and of itself is evil and come from such, I'm doubting that the priest meant the person evil, I do not think she's evil. I do consider some non-believers to be evil.

Gutted for you I guess.

Ha, that's funny, gutted. You sure est yourself a very low standard of gutting to reach. The thing here is that bull.... is the mildest form of expression from atheist toward Christians. Christianity is important enough to attack, it's the most attacked thing in the U.S. these days. Yet we stand strong and go about God's work. If you're thinking about responding about persecution, don't, we here in the U.S. are not persecuted only harassed.

Everyone who shuns god is an enemy.

Yup. That's enough insanity for today. I'm out to hammer some reason back to my head.

@EccentricAlien, I have been going to Catholic masses this year, and many sermons seem to touch briefly on the topic of atheism, skepticism, etc. Probably the priests are feeling more threatened.

Gawds, you're intellectually dishonest.

No I'm not, you're the one who made the big deal out of what the priest said. If you wanted the focus to be on the family time you would have left the priest and his statement out of it.
Now to address what he said, it was not the best of times to be focusing on the evil of atheism, (I suspect it was atheism he was referring to and not anyone personally). Like I said in a post above I know evil atheist and I've met many here I believe I would be friends with if they lived around here, I have a brother that's an atheist and some friends also. I'm quite familiar with this kind of relationship.
My pastor has said things from the pulpit that I've completely disagreed with about unbelievers, enough so it made me terribly angry and I told him about it too, I did so in private because I had more respect for him than he did for those he spoke of.

I don't. I do not see atheist as the enemy, yes a few but not most. I see atheism a the enemies war on Christians. If you're wondering who the enemy is listen to the Stones they know all to well. Honestly as irritating as you are, from what I know about you I would have no problem being a friend to you, but then they say keep your friends close and your enemies closer.Big Grin
