When I was still pretty young, tenish or so, my parents gave me a book about Alexander the Great. I was very interested in the Greeks and Romans and their legends. Although my parents were pretty liberal, I don't think they would have given it to me if they knew what it was all about. It was the "Persian Boy" by Mary Renault. Has a less telling title in German though, but it's all about Alexander's lover boy telling his story.

Speaking of not giving children books contradicting the bible.
