Why does the Bible say there are different races of people...

What the hell are you on about? You yourself stated that the epiphany that we are all the same race didn't occur until the 20th century so I don't understand your incredulity in accepting the fact that the ancients that penned the Bible didn't have this fact at their disposal.

Example:

Ezra 9:2 "They have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, and have mingled the holy race with the peoples around them. And the leaders and officials have led the way in this unfaithfulness."

You're confused because you're using a jacked up translation.
Stick with the King James Version.
This is the original Hebrew with translation
http://www.scripture4all.org/OnlineInter...f/ezr9.pdf
The is how that passage sounds translated directly from the Hebrew
Quote:That they-took-up from·daughters-of·them for·them and·for·sons-of·them and·they-mixed seed-of the·holiness in·peoples-of the·lands and·hand-of the·chiefs and·the·prefects she-was in·the·offense the·this first

this is the King James translation.
Quote:Ezra 9
2 For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass.

Race is not mentioned, "seed" means offspring.

You appear to be using the NIV version, which has many discrepancies compared to the original text, changes the context of scripture, and in many cases omits whole verses.

Right... I'm not getting the point. The bible was written by people who knew fuck all and got everything wrong pretty much. This seems like a minor error in comparison.

As another kick in the shin against the "word of God" argument, sure, we can always use more of those.

You loose all credibility for telling me to use the KJV. I wouldn't wipe my ass with it. Even if I had no toilet paper, I'd rather go without.

Not even going to try and offer an explanation?
I can PROVE the NIV is mistranslated...

The bible is not to be taken literally. It was not assembled to be the sole word of god. It was created to standardize the different sects. A literalist take of the bible is wrong. "race" its distance traveled from the initial group. Things like skin color are due to latitude. well, "sun light" actually but you get the point.

I can PROVE that the KJV is mistranslated. At the time they didn't even know about textual criticism.

Also I quoted the NIV and then in another reply the ESV.

Also, if I was bleeding out my ass I wouldn't roll up the KJV and use it as a tampon, I'd go without.

(March 3, 2015 at 9:13 am)Aractus Wrote: Look, a few times I hear yanks use the term "race relations" including I believe their president Obama, but there's no validity to citing different races of people and this was not known in the bronze age, or even for most of the 20th century. It was only latter in the 20th century we worked that out. There's only one human race. And anyone that disagrees is unable to list them or to say how many races there are. But yanks aside, no one uses the term now because we know it's based on bronze-age mythology and has been disproved scientifically. So why does the Bible claim otherwise?

A race is a regional variation of a species. Are you saying that humans have no regional variations?

Biologically, race doesn't mean species. It doesn't mean subspecies (except that a geographic race that is sufficiently different taxonomically may be considered a subspecies). It means identifiable regional variations of the same species.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.
