CAR BRANDS
RE: CAR BRANDS
I would hope that the shortcoming of the electric car (range/refuel time) would be the advent of further mass transit infrastructure, at least in America.

This is why I think the European market is better set up for electric vehicles.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Electric cars are never going to be totally environmentally friendly until we invent an efficient way to produce electricity without all the pollutive waste.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

There are ways to generate electricity by harnessing the sun's heat, not light as with those polluting photovoltaics, but heat... warm up water in a closed circuit.... warm it enough and you get water vapor... steam... steam engine.

But there's always some waste. The materials used have a finite duration and need replacing - not sure how recyclable that can be...

Alex K said he's right on the edge of solving cold fusion. Just a few more illicit tests.... I've said too much. Sorry Alex! Never mind, NSA agents! Nothing to see here....

As I understand clean sources of electricity, they're not (yet) efficient to the point where they might replace fossil fuel and nuclear power.

From a greenhouse gas point of view, nuclear is clean... and I mean fission.
Fusion is much cleaner... but not feasible yet... sadly.
I remember Scotty being amazed at fusion power, so I wouldn't wait around for that to come by anytime soon. 23rd century is still a while away.
Then again, he had dilithium crystals... maybe we should go that way....

You're right that nuclear is certainly cleaner than fossil in that there's no greenhouse gases, but of course there's all that inconvenient radioactive waste to get rid of. And we'll inevitably run out of Russian agents to eat it all.

The secret to cold fusion is using centar manure as a catalyst. So there will be no big breakthroughs in cold fusion until some rouge biologist creates a human-horse chimera.

Actually, if we believe the power plant engineers, 4th generation nuclear plants will be able to use every last ounce of radioactivity from the uranium and the waste will be only inert ash...
That's a great boast, but I don't see it applied.

Already been done:

No idea if it was a rouge biologist or an ordinary one, though.
