First off, no two religions are the same. It's completely nuts IMO to pretend they are all the same. The notion that we must all treat religions as equals (as we do with race) is just another example of conflating race and religion in order to give religion a free pass. This is specifically why we are encouraged to discriminate between secular ideologies, but called racist for carrying out the same type of evaluation of religious ideologies.
As to the difference between a cult and a religion I will go with a line from Joe Rogans last stand up special:

I would not compare Scientology to any major world religion because fundamentally they have nothing in common. The modus operandi is entirely different to the big four [ Christianity /
Islam / Buddhism / Hinduism ] that have secured hundreds of millions of followers over many centuries. So less every atheist converts to it then I cannot see it attaining the same status
which means it is destined to remain forever a cult and so cannot be the same as them. But unlike other cults Scientology has survived and is a name everyone has heard of. This makes
them an established cult if it can be described as such. I would say it cannot survive as long as the big religions. For it has a next to impossible chance of it becoming as popular as them
I have seen documentaries on Scientologists. The methodology of American Scientologists in respect of former Scientologists is very psychologically disturbing indeed. Now they have files
on all members just in case they decide to leave. The disgusting threat they made to John Travolta when he found himself in a very dark place is evidence of this. Even if it was true to do
that to him when they did is entirely without justification. That kind of behaviour makes very angry indeed but I am not allowed to judge others for obvious reasons so I shall say no more
Here in Birmingham they once tried to get members of the public to pick up litter with them. They promised not to talk shop. Picking up litter is a no brainer but this to me seemed more like
a public relations exercise for Scientology rather than simply performing community service. Especially given the negative or non existent opinions the general public may have about them. I
was once given the stress test which looking back on it now I found very unconvincing because it is not designed to fail. And what ever may reduce stress joining Scientology is the last thing
I would think of. Though I have no problem at all in learning more about them [ and I wish to ] even if what I have so far heard is overwhelming negative. They are also banned in Germany

You should look into Freezone Scientologists, they're not as crazy as the regular ones.
