Look it up, I'd like to see some evidence supporting this. I think you'll find the opposite. In fact, THC has been documented as providing relief from some lung disorders, such as asthma, even when smoked.

Regarding the lung cancer risk: also false.

To say marijuana is "just as dangerous" as alcohol is false. It's actually hardly dangerous at all. Marijuana cannot kill you. You might drive a car after using and kill someone, but you could say the same about beer, cough syrup, or turkey.

It's safer than hundreds of items you can buy in any grocery store.

The only downside is the smoking can deposit burnt plant matter in your lungs. The act of smoking can irritate your throat and lungs. These are downsides that can be completely eliminated through vaporization or eating in place of smoking. Regardless, if someone desires to irritate their throat and lungs, who are we to stop them?

Sorry if I'm coming off as preachy, but this is an issue I am passionate about, and I feel an open-minded community such as thing would see the benefits of a shift in attitude towards cannabis, and "drugs" in general.

Its ok thats fine. I don't actually know much about it I simply said what I'd seen and heard on the program. I don't know where to find the evidence of it.
Also it was a pretty old program. Its form 1995 I'll look the program up and try and see if there is any evidence of this claim it makes. And I'll look elsewhere too.
The program is with Rik Mayall, its called 'Out of my head', here's some info on it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0141698/#comment
It doesn't really say anything about pot there though.
The thing is I don't know much about drugs. Perhaps because the only non-medicated drug I have ever took is alcohol. And I have very little of that indeed. Probably about a lager or two a week.
I've never even smoked ever. Not one cigarette.

You do realise that (a) your definition of a drug is bullshit, and (b) cocaine and heroin are both drugs extracted from plants.

A drug is a substance (other than a food) that has an effect on the human body. Alcohol is a drug by all definitions, as is Marihuana, cocaine, pain killers, etc.
I'm fully aware that cocaine and heroin are from plants. But I was talking about the man-made mixture in cocain and heroin.

When was the last time you heard about someone getting a tainted bag of marijuana that can destroy the immune system?

RE: Marijuana
Thats not the point though. The point is that those substances alone are the cause of the effects on the human body, thus making them all drugs. You seem to be confusing the actual drug "cocaine" or "heroin" with the substances that are sold to addicts, which can come with man-made substances that are very dangerous.

Those aren't the actual drug though, they are merely the mixture that the dealer gives to the addict. The same thing applies to coffee, where the drug is actually the caffeine, but it comes bundled with the mixture that makes up the rest of the drink.

Yes, that's what I was refering to. The substances that are sold to addicts. Clearly manmade.

I've never heard of marijuana being very dangerous, let alone being addicting.

You are confusing the addictive street cocaine and heroin that is altered by man to natural marijuana plants. Marijuana can only be considred a drug if it's laced with something. LSD, PCP or embalming fluid come to mind.

No I'm not. A "drug" is a substance that affects the human body. That is the definition. It has nothing to do with legality or anything like that.

Substances such as caffeine are drugs, as well as alcohol. Marijuana is a drug because it has medical benefits, same with paracetamol, aspirin, etc. Drugs simply have an affect on the human body; the name is a very broad and general term.

You have this delusion that "drug" mean an addictive substance, and to be quite honest that is a very immature and uneducated attitude. Stop lecturing me on what you clearly do not understand.

Drank too much, still do, that's the reason I didn't do the others cause I suspect I'd probably be dead or a wreck now.
Naw, I bet if you smoked pot you probably would drink alot less or not at all. I used to drink almost every night, until I discovered pot. Now I rarely drink.

I saw a program about drugs and it said that marijuana is FOUR times worse for your lungs than normal cigarettes.
I bet they did that study with joints vs filtered cigarettes. Try repeating the study using non-filtered smokes and water filtered pot (bong hits). [Image: bongsmi.gif]

IMO marijuana it's every bit as dangerous as alcohol
Statistics would show you to be mistaken.
That said I do accept it has pain-relief qualities
So that's why I'm feeling no pain right now![Image: crazy.gif]

I don't care what people do to their own bodies, as long as it doesn't influence the health and safety of others around them.

[Image: smoke.gif]Thank You!

marijuana is dangerous, certainly was the time I smoked it and then drove home ... never again!
Don't drink and drive, don't get stoned and drive either. It wasn't the marijuana that was dangerous, it was you![Image: Dippie.gif]

And that natural plant was blessed during the Creation week.
God rocks! Yay God! Although this sack of mexican brown I'm smoking right now doesn't seem particularly 'blessed' properly. Maybe he'll bless the potency of my next sack a bit better.

Ah, been there, done that.
I smoke like 5 joints in a whole weekend, just to relax, you know?
And the only thing that bothers me is that it's hard to stay balanced on a bicycle afterwards.
Besides, here, in Belgium, having more than 2 grams of it is illegal, and I think that's bullshit!
I think marijuana should be legalized everywhere.
It's less harmful than cigarettes, yet cigarettes don't make you feel good or anything.
MJ makes you feel like your mind is a utopia in which nothing can go wrong! I mean, how awesome is that?! Cigarettes might help you feel less stressed, but still, you need about ten per day of those to stay unstressed...

I bet they were referencing the 1988 study in the NEJM. That study looked at filtered cigarettes and joints AND used only 15 males who smoked both pot AND cigarettes. I'm surprised this study made it into the NEJM with such methodological issues. I would be curious to know the funding sources for the research...hmmm
