How long have you been an atheist?

I've been one pretty much my whole life (I'm 18). My parents gave me the gift of choice, not forcing any religion upon me and letting me make up my own mind what to believe.

I'd be interested in hearing about other peoples experiences - the reason for this thread.

My whole life as soon as I understood what people were actually talking about when they mentioned "God" and "Jesus", as soon as I realized how literal it actually was otherwise it was meaningless and wasn't really something. I realized this as a kid... I also only realized in my teens that some people really actually don't believe in evolution when they HAVE heard of it (i.e : They're not a kid too young to hear of it/ they don't live in a box).

EXCEPT, I believed in God for 8 weeks of my life in 2007 when I went insane. Well, very insane - I believed everything and anything then. Multiple delusions - acute psychosis (nothing that made me aggressive, thankfully). I believed *I* was God, I believed I was Satan, an alien, other people were gods, aliens, other people weren't real, were in my mind, etc etc - I believed anything anyone told me and I believed anything said on radio or in song lyrics and thought they applied to me.

So, yes. I've only ever really believed in God... when I was insane. True story. Well, religion is insane really so I'm glad that's the only time I ever believed in it lol! Big Grin

I've been an atheist all my life as well. My family gave me the option to believe or not. Total freedom to make up my mind on my own. My school kept trying to push me towards religion by sending the whole class to church and singing religious songs. Made little or no impact on any of us. It was a catholic school which I had no choice but to go in because options were very limited.
So really, a mostly secular stand point where I could of gone either way. The more I learnt about religion, the more skeptical I became. I'm not easily impressed by stories and claims.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

I grew up in a very free thinking family as well. I have never believed in god(s). My mother is a Christian and my father is Native American.

I don't remember exactly what age I was when I finally decided I am an atheist, but I'm relatively certain it was 16. I'm 25 now, so 9 years.
