The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

I mean a god has to be something right? Is it one of many gods? If so then why worship that one and not others? Is it actually another life form, an alien from outer space perhaps, that is far more powerful than us? Do you worship your boss? The leader of your country? A corporation? Does this god inhabit the same reality that we do? How did this god actually create our reality? And did it create its own reality? If not then does it have a god? If so then why not worship that one instead? If this god did create its own reality, how did it do it? Is this reality just like a virtual reality that we create? Like in a game? Are we meant to be worshipping this god out of fear? Out of love? Just because it's more powerful than us? Does it need our worship, care for it or even acknowledge it? If so why? And does that mean we have power over the god if we don't worship it because it needs it? Are we going to achieve anything by worshipping it, like stopping it from switching off the computer that we inhabit? Are there better ways of getting what we want like being interesting or entertaining? RE: IF in the end, you find that God does exist ....

Thinking upon this a bit more, I'd worship the hidden surprise in a cracker jacks box if the benefits were good enough. My adoration is pretty much up for sale to the highest bidder.

Thanks to the majority of you for exploring the question... and as the above poster reminds us, there are more questions! I especially like the serious responses from: emjay, robvalue, tonus, and even some from whateverist! My whole point wasn't to trick anyone into saying "no", as some suggested. But to provoke thought about who God really is. All we have is what has been handed down to us from our ancestors. And they are men. As all of us, they were fallible. I'm sorry, but I can't take everything I've read, or heard at face value. On either side of the issue! I am a Catholic by birth, and a Christian through my experiences. But, those are my experiences. I truly believe that Christ is our savior. In many ways. That said, I'm not pushing my faith on anyone here.... actually just the opposite. I'm looking for any of you to put up arguments of factual truth, in contrast to what I believe is truth. Again, thanks for your serious responses! I've learned that some of you do have an open mind about God, and who, or what He is. Its helped me to understand your reasoning more. I hope you realize that my mind is always open to your answers and opinions. Sorry for the delay in responses.... but I am one busy guy!
Quis ut Deus?
Quick question. How do you know that "God" is a he?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

You make people miserable and there's nothing they can do about it, just like god.
-- Homer Simpson God has no place within these walls, just as facts have no place within organized religion. -- Superintendent Chalmers Science is like a blabbermouth who ruins a movie by telling you how it ends. Important things. -- Ned Flanders Once something's been approved by the government, it's no longer immoral. -- The Rev Lovejoy (June 2, 2015 at 12:34 pm)Rhythm Wrote: Eternity sounds like a long time to be one's self. I don't know how my positions might change over eternity, or even that there would be any reason to call that changed self..an eternity from now, the same self. Admittedly, most of my own personal bells and whistles are based on the expected shortness of my existence. I think that this might be in the periphery of This. In truth I could only answer the question the OP poses dependent on the specific beliefs of the poster regarding the said consequences of my decision. For example, many christians we've debated on these forums believe that Hell is merely a place for the soul to go and die. Chad Wooter once wrote that hell is more of a place for non believers to hang out and party simply without the benefits of god being around. (although I can see none). Still more christians believe that Hell is a place of eternal fiery torture ... excuse me torment - I wouldn't want to offend our local christards and say that god 'tortures' the unbeliever. He only "torments" them. Whatever. The point is that I would rather have death and peace without consciousness than accept that narcissistic bastard's "gift" of eternal life. 900 trillion years in heaven of worshiping a self-absorbed, self-proclaimed angry, wrathful, jealous, genocidal, vindictive, blood-thirsty, racist god who loves himself more than he could ever love anything or anyone else?? Hmmm ... what are my options again? |
