Thoughts on euthanasia
#21
RE: Thoughts on euthanasia
I fully support it. If I were diagnosed with something that caused me to 'lose' myself, I would seek to end my life (or to allow others to end it) prematurely to save myself and others that heartache.

I had no say in how I entered the world. I feel I should have ultimate say in how I depart it.

Sorry about your dad.
Same story for my dad almost 15 years ago.
Someone at the funeral said that you eventually forget the sound of their voice.
But I heard it clear as day this morning when I was yelling at me kid.

I used to work in a hospital years ago and I never met a nurse that didn't believe that Euthanasia shouldn't be legalised.

I'd hate to leave this place without saying my goodbyes to my loved ones.
But as it stands, if I get that wish I'll probably have to suffer unbearably.

Sorry, yours was just picked at random out of the ones suggesting the legislature would be able to set up laws for euthanasia.  With politics it would be tough enough, but with the christians in politics and the voting masses, the end result is what I stated.  Several states have the same type of laws.  Look what happened to Dr. 'Euthanasia'.  There will never be proper legislation as long as the christians are the majority.

Well I support euthanasia and I believe nations will soon follow the example of Holland - It will be a slow, gradual process, but eventually we'll get there. I have sympathy for people in moments of suffering. Honestly, I don't know if I would be capable of mercifully killing someone I love who was in pain, but I understand why other would want to do it.

You have my condolences, Yeauxleaux. Sad

As for euthanasia, yes I agree with it once the illness is terminal and causing nothing but pain to the sufferer. But I think it has to be a decision made with informed consent by the patient, who is judged to be of sound mind and can still be trusted to make their own decisions. Invariably, this will bring it own problems and complications, but I think it's better than forcing sick people to live in abject misery for the last few weeks/months of their lives.

Honestly, it boggles my mind that this is even up for debate. It's like rob said, we treat dogs better than humans in this regard.

And let's face it, the only reason religious people object to it is to make themselves feel better about how they appear in the eyes of their invisible deity they can't prove exists. Forcing other people to endure preventable suffering for your religious beliefs is just appalling.

Thank you (and to everyone else for their support too)

I'm doing ok, it wasn't a shock and by the time it happened I was relieved his suffering was over. Upset obviously, but doing ok

mine died in the year 2000. Not a day goes by without a thought of him.  And believe me when he told us "you people are keeping me alive for you." I understood what he meant.  I'da done him myself.  While it was fresh, I kept one thing of his that reminds me of him.  It was his handshake.  If I close my eyes and think I can feel it to this day.

hang in there guy.  As you go on, look around for the reminders of him.  they can't reliably repeat them, but people report them all the time. Heck, if it works in QM it can work in easing the transition for you.

The weirdest thing is that it keeps slipping my mind actually, then I'll think something like "oh I'll ask Dad what he thinks" and then it'll hit me again, I can't ask him. That's the worst bit.

I'm trying to look out for my Nana though, losing your child is every parents' worst nightmare I imagine.
