How do you rectify the aggressiveness of christianity in general (Crusades) with the claim that "The meek shall inherit the earth"?

The meek are those who submit and uphold the will of God above their own personal desires. The Crusades were not aggression on the part of Christians, but a response to Christian persecution by Muslims that over time escalated.
