I don't usually endorse documentaries as a great source of information.  But the HBO special Going Clear, based on the book(which I haven't read, otherwise I might be endorsing that instead) does a pretty good job illustrating how obviously parasitic Scientology is. Not that you need to see the documentary to know that, I think most people already knew it's just a bunch of people looking to scam a bunch of other people.

Just read some of L Ron's fiction, nuf said. Believe this whole thing started off as a joke and got out of hand.
