I would create a polytheist religion also. The deities would all be aspects of the same god so that it would appear welcoming to all religions. I would make certain that my faith had a lot of nonsense sayings that each person was supposed to find their own meaning. Sort of like the Zen Buddhist's one hand clapping mantra.

If you were to create your own religion..

There would be a deistic god who doesn't expect worship, but had laid out a set of moral codes that can provide the human race with survival and joy.
1) Respect people of all races, sexual orientations, creeds, nationalities, genders, and other things which may be used as the basis of unjust discrimination. Slander nobody unless they have done you wrong, and then do not slander the entire group of which that person may belong. 2) Provide all members of society with health care, education, food, shelter, and a basic living so long as they show a commitment to working. 3) Do not lie, cheat, steal, kill, assault, rape, or otherwise mistreat another human. 4) Do not initiate force unless it is justified to do so, such as when under attack.
#FeelTheBern? Then get out there and volunteer on progressive campaigns, get appointed to government committees, join your local political party, and consider running for office. In order to push for change, you must participate in the political process.

The success of many religions aren't determined by a perfect plan by the originators, but by dumb luck through a combination of leadership or political convenience after the leader has passed.
Christianity needed Constantine and Paul, Mormons needed Brigham Young. If I created a religion, it should be able to be revised in light of new knowledge. A religion should actually be inclusive and positive, you will not go to hell, there will be no hell. Positive actions would beget positive things in your life or someone else's life. Religion can be abused so badly, the best thing you could do may to not have any religion at all, whenever any authority declares that you should live your life a certain way, there will inevitably be coercion involved to force people to behave according to the religion's principles.

If I was create my own religion, I'd create a very visually appealing set of deities to entice people. Also, I'd try and convert rich and famous people to get the message out. Finally, I'd say "convert or die". It worked for Muhammadans so why can't it work for me?
