I would create a polytheist religion also. The deities would all be aspects of the same god so that it would appear welcoming to all religions. I would make certain that my faith had a lot of nonsense sayings that each person was supposed to find their own meaning. Sort of like the Zen Buddhist's one hand clapping mantra.

There would be a deistic god who doesn't expect worship, but had laid out a set of moral codes that can provide the human race with survival and joy.

Women are the primary backers of religions.  They like to suffer for their favorite deity.  All of the Catholic nuns think that they will spend eternity banging Jesus.    The Mormon women want to be some guy's termite queen and churn out enough babies to populate his world.  The muslim women think that they will be part of some super stud's harem in paradise.  If there was a religion with temple prostitutes the place would be stuffed to the rafters with hookers for the god.

We could do to Christians what they did to the pagans and rebrand their holidays and symbols. No one has to give up celebrating on Dec 25th but the holiday will have a different meaning.

The success of many religions aren't determined by a perfect plan by the originators, but by dumb luck through a combination of leadership or political convenience after the leader has passed.

Christianity needed Constantine and Paul, Mormons needed Brigham Young.

If I created a religion, it should be able to be revised in light of new knowledge.

A religion should actually be inclusive and positive, you will not go to hell, there will be no hell.

Positive actions would beget positive things in your life or someone else's life.

Religion can be abused so badly, the best thing you could do may to not have any religion at all, whenever any authority declares that you should live your life a certain way, there will inevitably be coercion involved to force people to behave according to the religion's principles.

If I was create my own religion, I'd create a very visually appealing set of deities to entice people. Also, I'd try and convert rich and famous people to get the message out. Finally, I'd say "convert or die". It worked for Muhammadans so why can't it work for me?
