The "Stupid things Christians say" Thread

RE: The "Stupid things Christians say" Thread
Your mom thought God was a trickster djinn in a lamp waiting to twist your wish into a pretzel?
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

My brother does that, too, but mostly with prosperity gospel bullshit.  It's embarrassing.

My mom was a crazy loon. LOL I have heard other Christians make similar statements. When I was a Christian, such comments frustrated me. Now they just seems silly.

This is some scary insane stuff!

The problem is that religious people sometimes seem to encourage each other to be more and more deluded. They receive positive feedback for statements which we would think sound like the onset of mental illness.

Then it becomes difficult to pick out the ones who are actually ill and need help from those who are caught up in the social dynamic and just enjoying the attention they get. I dread to think how much illness goes undiagnosed.

There are people on this forum (I won't name them) who I do seriously worry are suffering from some sort of mental illness, unless the things they claim to experience are all just made up for our benefit. But other theists are unlikely to suggest such a thing because it would undermine themselves.

They were always silly.  Now just are simply able to recognize it as such.

On a fundamental level, theists are silly people.  Just consider the sheer nonsense they profess to believe.

I s'pose that's not all that different from what my mum used to do. When I was a young boy, she had a kitchen full of ladies and one minute I can hear collective crying, the next minute I hear collective laughter. She was reading the "tea leaves". Except in this case, it was greek "Turkish" coffee. You know how you turn it upside down and let the sludge form lines as it runs down. The real scary part was mum actually believed in what she was saying 100%.

Does this mean that ALL Christians fall into one or more of those categories?

Putting the shoe on the other foot, how instructive (and fun!) would it be to create a thread of stupid things that atheists say?

Or would this be redundant? [Image: ani_dancing.gif]

Have fun.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god.  If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.

My mom doesn't really give me a hard time about being an atheist, aside from a couple of little remarks here and there. Yesterday I was at her house and she asked me a strange question, "I know your an atheist but do you believe in the constitution?", I was like what? She said " Well since the constitution talks about god I figured you wouldn't believe anything it says.". I nearly fell out of my chair but I had to remain calm because I really can't blow up on my mother like would some regular joe.

She immediately told me not to pray for those things because god would do horrible things in my life to teach me those values. Strangely enough, she wasn't the only person who expressed terror at asking for things like strength or patience. Apparently, some of these people believe if you ask for patience, for example, then god would  create events in your life that would frustrate or even harm you so that you will learn patience.

I would encourage you to pray for anything...and let God answer as He sees fit.

However, I see the logic of their counsel.

How does one learn patience if not by trial?

Have fun.

Thank you, Jenny.

Though I myself sometimes resort to mockery or get angry with a post(er), I'm actually more focused on trying to convey information that will be helpful to the recipient and those lurking. So, I was being facetious in my post above.  Cool

Once in awhile, it would be nice to see a more knowledgeable atheist correct a newbie who posts a howler, but I guess you guys prefer to let stupid dogs lie.
