In my case it's precisely because I can't get inside it.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

I was once owned by a tomcat I called 'Mrs. Hudson', after Sherlock's landlady. Where do I fall on your sexist/misogynist scale?

As with many language nuances, the Greeks, for instance place a male extension on some words and female on others. Eg, animals, inanimate objects, etc. Just tradition I 'spose.

Because they lure you in, take all your money, overwhelm your life, and sometimes kill you outright.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that, from what I understand, most languages with genders (especially Latin, Navis), have decided it's a feminine word for whatever reason. I could be wrong about that.
Besides, could you imagine the crisis of sexuality that would result if all the guys who have sex with cars suddenly started to realise that the cars they fucked were male:

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Grammar is there for us, not the other way around. You can overstep it if you like.
It's not about fashion but about education. Using the wrong grammatical forms only tells other people you're not well enough educated. Just like many people (mostly Americans) don't know the difference between the conditional moods "was" and "were". While many people say "if god was real" the correct form is "if god were real". I don't know about you but I don't like people thinking about me I've skipped classes, which I've never done (cuz English classes were my favorites at school and I never skipped even one).
The hypocrisy in this post is, literally, beyond comprehension.
