While I'm not NEARLY on a par with your situation, optic nerve replacement is my person Grail. This is why the bionic eye in the article would do me no good - massive trauma to my left optic nerve.

The eye, it would seem, is poorly designed.

Quote:The most obvious design flaw of the retina is that the cellular layers are backwards. Light has to travel through multiple layers in order to get to the rods and cones that act as the photo-receptors. There is no functional reason for this arrangement – it is purely quirky and contingent.
not to mention the naturally occurring "blind spot" due to our evolution. The Octopus, on the other hand which evolved its eye independently in the same permanent environment, has no such flaw.

Losing my eyesight is my greatest fear. I honestly don't understand how anyone copes with it. If I was diagnosed with macular degeneration, I would take myself out.
It's not that bad after the first year. The first year you kind of lose your mind, between anxiety and sensory deprivation and overload all at once. You tend to be a little hysterical. Mobility is scary as shit. I get panicked when things get too loud, or things vibrate. After awhile you adjust. It's not that bad. No need to kill yourself.
Am I interpretting this correctly BrokenQuill? You yourself are blind? Forgive my ignorance on the subject, but how do you do things on this forum... an app/program that dictates and has speach recognition?
I myself am not blind but have been wearing glasses since 7th grade... I'm going on 32 this Sept... Every time I go for an exam, my vision is worse... its to the point where I cant read the words on a screen 1.5" away from my face... I need my glasses for everything, otherwise everything is a blur... my next step is lasik... hopefully, it works lol
