Chad's right, but for the wrong reasons. The higher authority is The People, not the Christian god, as it was designed over 240 years ago without your god's sensibility.

C'mon Chad, let's have an argument regarding the founding fathers' Christian sensibilities.

As such the monument has primarily historic significance and incidentally religious significance. Devil worship had no such positive historical influence and erecting a monument to Satan is only a religious statement. Thus it is easy to justify the preservation of the Ten Commandments and the exclusion of the Satan statue.

Really?  Come on, which of the 10 Commandments do you think really influenced the development of civil laws?

Thou shalt have no other gods before me?  Unconstitutional.
No graven images?  Name a western country that enforced this one.
Honor the Sabbath and keep it holy.  Well, we did have Sunday laws, but they are mostly unconstitutional.
Thou shalt not take the name of the lord in vain?  Unconstitutional and perhaps part of anti swearing legislation but hardly a major civil law development.
Honor your father and mother?  I think not.  There is law concerning parental rights, but it's hardly unique to Christian and/or Jewish nations.
Thou shalt no kill?  Again a law just about everywhere before and after the ten commandments.
Thou shalt not commit adultery?  Not law in most states.  And hardly unique to Christian and/or Jewish nations.
Thou shalt not lie? Never a law in that bald form.  Thou shalt not lie under oath, shall not commit fraud etc. yes.  And again hardly a Judeo/Christian contribution to the legal world.
Thou shalt not covet?  Not a law anywhere in the Judeo/Christian world.

Got any legal treatises referring to them seriously as the basis for western law?  Philosophy?  I think not.

Besides, there is nothing incidental about the religious significance.  The first four are wholly religious.  Only three others have any legal relevance.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god.  If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.

Oh yes...please tell us how much the Founding Fathers loved your jesus bullshit.

Quote:Experience witnesseth that eccelsiastical establishments, instead of maintaining the purity and efficacy of Religion, have had a contrary operation. During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What have been its fruits? More or less in all places, pride and indolence in the Clergy, ignorance and servility in the laity, in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution.

11. Though shalt twist these words and do mental backflips to try and pretend the previous commandments have any relevance to your society.

Back to FSM, my interpretation is that pasta up the arse is not canon, so it's not punishable by tasteless condiments. I was trying to find something as stupid as the Ten Commandments and that was as close as I could get.
