Truth is, I don't take the internet too seriously. You don't know if anyone is serious or simply shitting everybody. I know about that facebook function. It's one of these ivasive tools that can do more harm than good. One should assume that people being on facebook have at least a few real world acquaintances frequenting their account. And it's up to these people to react, since "friend" doesn't mean shit on the internet.

Suggestion about suicide prevention
|
I think it's a good idea, considering the number of threads about depression that pop up.
I'm all for suicide prevention, but the reality is that there is very little we can do if a person here threatens to kill themselves. Like I said in the other thread, even if a person puts up all of their personal information, the authorities in most places are going to be extremely hesitant to get invovled over something like an internet post unless it has direct and specific threats of harm.
The truth is that there is very little we here can do to help a person like that beyond lending a sympathetic ear.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

Everything we can do could possibly worsen the situation for all we know. We have to accept the fact we don't know each other as persons. So we don't know which word triggers what in each others perception. We are in no way schooled to handle a situation like that in any case.
Proper gun control would be more effective.

In more than half of these cases, they used firearms. Indeed, more people in this country kill themselves with guns than with all other intentional means combined, including hanging, poisoning or overdose, jumping, or cutting. I don't have a strong opinion about gun laws one way or the other, but if someone truly wanted to kill themselves they'd find a way to do it with or without a gun.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

If I want to I'll do it. If not, I won't. Why do people care so much? Some of you don't even like me. haha.

I've hardly had any interaction with you at all, but I wouldn't want you to end your life. I think, generally, most people are fairly decent and care about their fellow humans, the world, the environment, etc. Playing Cluedo with my mum while I was at Uni: "You did WHAT? With WHO? But the humans generally prefer to help others if they can, and living humans are normally more useful in the society than dead ones. So unless they are psychopaths like me, they will try to be helpful to even total strangers. With the number of depressed members here, maybe you all can consider requesting a dedicated section for it? Maybe if the depressed ones see others struggling similarly and not giving up, they can find some semblance of hope? Though it might do the opposite, but as a discussion forum the best we can really do is give them an outlet.
