Wow, I'm just catching up on this thread, but I had no idea that Deepthunk was such a raging cunt.  That puts a new perspective of his claim that there are fake atheists here in the shoutbox.

Is he seriously claiming that Jenny isn't an atheist because she disagrees with other atheists?  What a fuckhead.

I guess he imagines himself to be some kind of atheist soldier and that making bullshit claims somehow serves his cause. He's also under the misconception of atheists being a homogeneous mass, following a common ideology. And so he feels betrayed.

That's why I always argue for individuality and against the churches dissapearing being a good thing. People would just rally behind the next flag at hand.

I've never understood why it would matter if Hitler/German was believers or not.

The reason for the rise of Nazism in Germany is mostly secular, even if they where the most devout nation through out time.
Nationalism and racism was the building blocks for NSDAP.
Secular reasons.

The only reason to ever bother with "Hitler was Catholic", is when christians try to argue that he was secular. He was not, but the resoning behind his ideology was, largely.

Mostly it was the Great depression bringing Hitler to power. In a similar thread, months ago, I posted the results of the Reichstag elections between the years 1920 and 1932. In 1928, the NSDAP was still fringe with 2,63 percent of the votes. In 1932, they suddenly had 37 percent.

Its the reason to why Nazi ideology worked so well. My point was that the ideology in it self is mainly secular (particularly in its argumentation), even if it flirts with the Christian anti-Semitism. So why bother with whether individual Nazis was religious.

Especially Hitler flirted with a lot of religious themes in his speeches and writings. The reason for this being that 95 percent of Germans still identified with christianity at the time and it was to appeal to these sentiments. He also used the churches to cement his rule with various treaties and concessions.

As I always keep saying, it's very complicated and facetted. Nazism wasn't a christian movement, but it wasn't an atheistic one either.
