Well as I've already said it's a proper peer reviewed paper, and the data they drew on is from SHARE, therefore they are not in control of what questions to ask, and as a survey there can't be a "control group". You can only have a control group with a controlled study, and for that you need to direct people what activities they are to do and not to do.

Incorrect. Multiple studies have shown it and I provided a list of them from the reference list in the Croezen et al. 2015 article. I'd be interested in how "sustained happiness" is being defined. Equanimity can be sustained, but I'm not sure about euphoria.
Aractus, from your reading of the paper do you recall if a definition was given?

As I mentioned that particular paper is concerned with depressive disorders not overall happiness or for that matter any other specific mental disorders. You have to realise that these papers have huge value when it comes to healthcare because it provides a foundation for what needs to be delivered for individual patient care. Providing patients suffering from depressive disorders with the regular opportunity to practise their religious beliefs seems to be a very important tool to help their health. And it's not just depressive disorders, yes this specific paper deals with depressive disorders, but it can also help stave off dementia and other non-communicable illnesses. Happiness will follow because healthier people are happier people.
I should note however that I've seen no evidence that converting to religion will provide the effect, and I would assume that the effect would be strongest for people who have deeper religious beliefs and practises, and I wouldn't think simply converting to religion would have any health effect, at least not immediately.
