I mean c'mon. "I say us white people"... dense as a rock if you can't see the sarcasm there to be honest.

I wouldn't call it blatantly obvious, especially when I've read plenty of posts that appear to be sarcastic but are not. I was pretty sure it was, but I could see how someone would be hesitant of jumping to that conclusion when it wasn't made explicit. If I only had a dollar for every time I misinterpreted the tone of someone's post.

Sarcasm is also especially hard to detect when people are talking about race, because people say the dumbest shit in all seriuosness when they approach that subject. Just look at the OP. Even when you know it's sarcasm, it's still the type of thing you would hear from an 11 year-old.

It seemed obvious to me, but then I'm prone to concede the benefit of the doubt. Like Naps, there were keywords I focused in on that clued me into the sarcasm, but the, as a writer, I'm comfortable parsing text without the benefit of body language, vocal tone, and other non-verbal indicators. Perhaps at this point we can stipulate that Shin is being forthright, and if he shows signs otherwise, bring up objections? That may quell the derail, and allow the hotter discussion to unfold unimpeded?

I'm particularly bad at missing humor/sarcasm in what people say and that has caused me some problems in the past but I had NO problem at all detecting Shinagami's sarcasm. He even made a specific post explaining it in detail for those who did. And he made a good point. Blacks do have an unfortunate history of destroying their own communities when they get pissed off at injustices done to them - including actions against those who had nothing to do with said injustices. It's a valid criticism - particularly considering the thread topic.

I’ve never participated in a riot myself. But when I hear someone say Blacks burn their own communities, I imagine myself in such a community looking around wondering, “Own? What does he mean ‘own?’ We don’t own anything around here.”

As Martin Luther King said a riot is the voice of the unheard. Historically, when Whites have rioted, it’s been for an entirely different reason. Whether we’re talking about the riots in Nova Scotia in the eighteenth century or the destruction of Black Wall Street in the 20th century, it’s always been Whites beating Blacks into our place on the bottom of the economic scale whenever we dared to build anything that might move us forward.

The op was not talking about burning businesses in his community. So his point is something else entirely.

Once it became clear that the Couth Carolina shootings were racially motivated, the Whites here at AF came down on the side of justice and were outraged at what had happened. I am equally outraged at what took place in VA. That the assailant also claimed to have been discriminated against because of his sexual orientation adds another element to this. I haven’t read all the posts yet, but I wonder if no heterosexuals have come on here suggesting we burn the businesses of gays (we’ll understand that they’re being sarcastic, or course.) He also said white WOMEN had discriminated against him, so maybe women should go out and burn the businesses of men. Hell, set the whole fucking country on fire and be done with it. arcasm:

You know what blacks really have an unfortunate history of? Not receiving the the dignity of been seen as anything other than as part collective, hive mind of some sort. It robs people of their individuality and humanity to the way you constantly reference 'Black people' the way some of you assholes do. As if black people are a single clump of dirt. You hit the nail on the head here Thena. I was always confused about my grandpa saying horrible things about "black people", and yet he is always the first person to either strike up a conversation or help anyone, even if he just met them. Not walking the talk, thankfully. Then, and this was just the other day, I realized that "black people" is just an idea that he has compartmentalized away from any actual black individual he has met. He has all of this evidence to the contrary, and still has this negative idea of "black people", and he's somehow able to keep his experience and his idea separate.

Your grandpa sounds quote human because that's what humans do. We put people in groups according to their most salient characteristics, whether it's race or gender or political affiliation or religion or hair color or whatever. Yet, the most salient characteristic is not always the deciding factor when we meet them face to face.

In other words, people at the bottom of the social ladder going after those on top. But almost all riots end up hurting those who have no significant power. The people in Ferguson weren't targeting Wall Street bankers, they were targeting convenience store owners. Often times they don't even target white people specifically, as in the L.A. riots in 1992 where for some reason, Koreans became the target.

I don’t want to justify the actions of rioters of any race. It is unproductive and counter-productive. I would however, like to share with you a brief history of the relations between Blacks and Koreans.

It actually goes back to the Korean Way in which so many Blacks fought. When we came back from the war we found that the US government was actually bringing Koreans over here and subsidizing their businesses in predominantly Black neighborhoods, while at the same time the banks were refusing to give us business loans. Of course, the Koreans had no love for the Blanks against whom they had fought in their country and Blacks had no love for the Koreans taking over our neighborhoods, not hiring our youth, not supporting community activities. Their presence continues to be a reminder that we are unwelcome visitors in our own neighborhoods.

This is why Black rioters attacked Korean businesses. Again rioting is not excusable I just wanted to provide a historical context for what seems like random violence.

Did I offend anyone? I didn't mean to.. Everybody just decided all at once to go away. I can't imagine that there's such a thing as a taboo subject at AF. Here we've started a decent conversation sand acrimony. He's not jumping on me and I'm not jumping on him. So where is everybody?
