It was ridiculous to me, how quickly this thread shifted into how poor Shinagami was being attacked because no one understood sarcasm.

Um...the reason the thread focused on her was because she felt it necessary to insult everyone that questioned whether or not her post was sarcasm.  Sans her pissy attitude, I doubt everyone would have concentrated on it so much.

But this is a dumb conversation to have in the first place.  The OP did not make a good point, as if white people rioting over this reporter's murder is even comparable to the riots in Baltimore in the first place.  The riots in Baltimore were due to the decades long oppression of black people by the authoritative forces that created a powder keg of hostility that was ignited by the death of yet aother innocent black man killed at the hands of the police.  To imply that white people see a double standard because rioting over the reporter's murder would be percieved as wrong while people are apologetic towards the Baltimore riots shows an absolute lack of basic understanding of human behavior and the psychological motivations behind it.  The authorites can only oppress people for so long before there is going to be an inevitable and hostile backlash.  While that backlash may not be morally justifiable, it is certainly understandable given that a human being will snap when pushed to the breaking point.  Factor in that it was a city-wide oppression, and you have set yourself up for one big "snap."

So, comparing the two is apples and oranges.  On top of that, the conversation completely misses the fact that black and white people are not monolithic blocs, and let's not forget that there were plenty of black people in Baltimore that worked to shield the police and did what they could to quell the riots.

This is why I hate discussions on race, because people see fit to look at in black and white(pun not intended) while the world is filled with shades of gray.  It was a dumb thread to start with, and I'm not sure why everyone thinks this is a conversation worth continuing.

I'm pretty glad Shin's gone. I said nice things about him/her/zir's thoughtful threads and posts on his/her/zir's suicide thread which lead to some very short and shallow PM's, only to later find out that I was confusing Shin with Shuffle. Glad I don't have to keep that up. Shin was a butthole.

I got the feeling that most of those who replied to this thread understood the issue. I felt the need to jump in when that first person (I don't feel like going back to page one to see who it was) said he thought the op had a valid case and again when Catholic lady said the same thing. There is no double standard and I think most of those here expressed that. That being the case and the op being gone there's really nothing else to say on this thread.

I think it comes down to what Thena (I think it was her) was saying earlier, whenever someone who happens to be black does something, it's "oh this is black people!". Only the majority group in any situation (whether it's white people, Christians in the West, straight people, etc) get that privilege of individuality, where they don't have to be held accountable for things other people in their group do.

It's like the N-word "double standard". Once again, a few black people saying the N-word in a rap song suddenly means "black people say the N-word so it's ok for me to say it too!". How old are we, 7? Why do you want to say it so bad? Why? think about that...

Yes, this is exactly like the use of the N-word. It's just an excuse where none is really needed because since when have White people needed Black people's permission to do anything? With the history of the KKK and the Arian Brotherhood and all the burnings and lynchings and rapings and beatings, now all of a sudden it's, "Well you did it in Baltimore so it's okay for us to do it now."

There's something disingenuous about that.
