I also believe that the notion of "God" is intentionally kept mysterious.
You can't kill or eliminate something if you don't know what it is or what it's weak point is.
Therefore God will always be a "boogy man type figure".
You can never get any better focus, as it will all begin to fall apart under scrutiny.
No God, No fear.

You're right! People can't afford to define it properly, because then you might be able to try and test for it. It must remain out of reach. When our reach gets longer, it has to move even further away.
You know, the last thing religious theists should be doing is trying to actually find God. The probability of him being the slightest bit like what they've been telling everyone is virtually zero.
He's safe from tests when housed in the imagination.

I like that position. Not sure why we have to define ourselves, why we have to be either this or that. I use atheist as the closest description for me. If I delve into details with others (and I don't want to do that here) I may fall into other descriptive categories on certain specific points of view.
